Answer those and you have you have the answer to your own question.
This democrat believes most welfare programs, like unemployment, should be time limited, (e.g., the unemployed mother with 3 kids has 24 months to get some gov. sponsored or subsidized job training and then is off the rolls.)

Section 8 housing should be reserved for disabled and elderly on fixed incomes only - not anyone who simply chooses not to work or has multiple children without the means to support them.

Although I support funding for education to get the unemployable skills for a job that provides a living wage, the whole concept of endless food stamps and a check does nothing but foster dependency.

As for government cuts, cut the ridiculous defense budget that has our military all over the world in countries with little or no threat. Cut the corporate tax breaks, reduce prisons and stop incarcerating non violent drug offenses, do away with the death penalty or, revise the process to prevent those on death row from filing appeals for decades while taxpayers foot the bill. And cut the budget of ALL federal agencies by 20%. There is enough waste in all of government that a 20% cut wouldn't even begin to make up for.

And yes, a life long democrat who has voted only once for a republican (my current governor).

Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University data cited here:

Okay, so I did some digging with the link, and interestingly - according to that poll, 54% of people who worked full time according to that survey voted Democratic. This was not reported amongst the more conservative blogs citing this data (haha, I wonder why.) So it seems that maybe the population surveyed voted Democrat more often than we thought.

I have no qualms about believing that people receiving government benefits are more likely to vote Democratic, but the gap might not be as large as you think.

"And yes, a life long democrat" I knew that BEFORE you admitted it by your post.

I support you in your first 3 paragraphs, after that, ot so much.

The military HAS BEEN CUT SEVERELY over the past few years under Obama and when the dems had control of Congress.

"Cut the corporate tax breaks,' Nice talking point. Please be MORE specific The devil is ALWAYS in the details.

The rest of that paragraph is PURE dem supported issues which I is agree with except for cutting the fed budget by 20%.

A lot of people are happy enough over not working and spending their time watching TV, playing video games, and break from that to go to the casino or bar. Why do you think bars open as early as noon? So why vote for Republicans, since they look down upon people who live that way?

I sincerely doubt that. The gaps look pretty wide. Can you cite any source that has lower percentages of voters on various welfare programs voting Democrat?

Plus, it's already known that the low-income (those most likely to qualify for the various welfare programs) overwhelmingly vote D, so Maxwell's data looks accurate.

"How does that not make sense to you? Obama was elected twice"

As was W, Bush but, that does NOT stop many on the left from hating and criticizing him!

This begs to question...

1) Do Democrats really want to get people off government programs?
2) Would it hurt them as a party if we saw 50% less people relying on these government programs?
3) Do Democrats want to create new programs to potentially expand and lock-in their base?

I view it similar to how Apple retains its customers, such as iTunes. You start buying your music from iTunes and it's only compatible with Apple products. If you were to change to say Samsung, you would have to go through a lot of work converting your songs and lose quality as a result from converting these files. I myself at one point was considering trying out Samsung, but decided against it because I was already so engraved into Apple. The more programs Democrats create, the more people who will end up relying on these programs, thus making them more likely to vote for the party who created and supports these programs. This is just my thinking anyways.

--------
DISCLAIMER: I've voted for Obama both elections and haven't regretted my choices. I even have a "I am a proud Obama voter" sticker on my fridge (it was sent to me for free, but I still put it up nonetheless). However, I am perfectly fine with being critical about the party I voted for. I consider myself someone who is near the center because I like ideas from both parties and also hate ideas from both parties. I tend to annoy a lot of hardcore Democrats and hardcore Republicans, but most people around the middle seem to agree with me or at least are fine with me when discussing politics. When it comes to social issues such as abortion, same-sex marriage, stem cells etc I side with liberals, when it comes fiscal issues such as tax policy, spending, government programs etc I side with conservatives. And then there are some issues where I'm mixed such as the second amendment. I support having universal background checks, but I also support being able to conceal carry for those who qualify. I support funding the military, but I don't want to preemptively police the world. Anyways, that's enough disclaimer lol. My point I'm trying to get across is I'm not attacking Democrats here, this is just a real concern I have about the party.
The economy has become global and technoloy has been progressing at a quick rate that has been leaving developed countries struggling to create jobs at levels in the past. The right wingers on this forum, don't seem to be aware of this shift, but it seems our population is pretty ignorant about what's happening.

This issue isn't welfare or wanting to keep people on it, as quite a few on here ignorantly say, but the fact the private sector profits and productivity keep increasing while wages stagnate and benefits decrease. I expect welfare to only increase in developed countries while the developing world reaches an equilibrium with us.

The issue I see is how we should do welfare now and in the future.
