Spending for education to be doubled by 2018 - Newspaper - DAWN.COM

What are your thoughts about this? I do appreciate the kind gesture but i worry about usa economy & feel that our own education system, soldiers, hospitals deserve this money more than any foreign country. Pakistan is a highly corrupt country & if you follow their politics closely, all the international aid goes into politicians' pockets. It never reaches the needy. I wish there was atleast a way to keep tabs on them to make sure its used for intended purpose. The tax payers should vote on this but unfortunately we dont have a say in anything.

It's easy to spend money you took from someone else...so govt goes.

P.s. It wouldn't be much better if it were spent here. We already spend more on govt education than any other country and our youth gets dumber by the minute

If people wanted to donate their private money to this, by all means, power to you. But how this is paid for my me, you, and other US taxpayers is just unfathomable.

I am beginning to really think tax rates should be significantly lowered to only cover services used by all taxpayers (roads, defense, infrastructure, schools, etc). If people then want to pay more in taxes so women in Pakistan can go to school, go right ahead.

How do they know that money won't end up going into the pockets of terrorist groups, of which there are many in that country.

Is there any topic on CD that can elude a discussion about terrorists or terrorism?

They don't. I don't know about going to "terrorist groups" but foreign aid seldom goes to the cause it claims. Usually from our corrupt government to another.

I think if you took $70 million dollars in cash, put it in a pile, and set it on fire to keep bums warm, it would have served a better purpose.

It's easy to give money that isn't yours and it deserves no thanking or applauding. If I take out a loan and use my neighbors house as collateral then give the entire amount to the homeless should I be applauded?

$70 million MORE??

Quote:
Between 2002 and 2008, the United States distributed more than $15 billion in overt foreign aid to Pakistan, of which more than $4.5 billion went to nonmilitary programs, according to a report prepared for the Congressional Research Service.

Nearly $700 million of that money went to support Pakistan’s education system, according to a report by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

President Barack Obama changed that relationship in October 2009, when he signed the Enhanced Partnership with Pakistan Act of 2009, better known as the Kerry-Lugar bill, which triples nonmilitary aid to the country for the next five years. The measure will allocate $7.5 billion to Pakistan from 2010 to 2014, investing in areas such as health care, education, social services, and humanitarian assistance.
Maybe Pakistan needs to build more madrassas for girls? 2000 aren't enough??

Quote:
In a nation where Muslim extremists are slowly strengthening their grip on society, the number of all-female madrassas has boomed over the past decade, fueled by the failures of the state education system and a deepening conservativism among the middle to upper classes.
