Anyone who does anything risky deserves to have bad things happen to them?
No, but if you go into a country like that knowing their brutal laws and do something like that, then yes, he got what he deserved.

If you try and steal something in N Korea and they put you in jail you deserve it. The rest of those examples aren't illegal. Stupid maybe, but not illegal.

And doing something risky doesn't mean you deserve something bad that may happen to you, but you should be prepared for that eventuality.

But why was he in a hostile country in the first place? There's no reason for any normal US citizen to be over there.

That's not a risk most are willing to take for exposure to a culture.

1. You shouldn't be in a ghetto unless you're from there. If you still decide to go, prepare for the worst.
2. If you go camping where you know there are bears, then prepare for the worst.
3. If you go hiking on a mountain and it's windy as hell, prepare for the worst.
4. If you go to a hostile country and provoke the government for a political agenda, prepare for the worst.

See the common theme here? I'm not necessarily saying people deserve bad things to happen to them, but they should be held accountable for their actions. This guy played with fire and not only got burned; he got scorched. Hard, hard lesson learned for him.

This reminds me of my second deployment to Iraq. There was a group of idiots who decided to go hiking in the mountains over there near the Iranian border. We spent all kinds of time and resources looking for them, and were irritated the entire duration of the search. Why were we irritated? Because they should've known better. But instead, they were captured by AQI and beheaded. Hostile countries like Iraq, NK, etc LOVE to get their hands on American prisoners because they wanna "teach us a lesson" and show that the US isn't superior to them. Are you comfortable going to countries that have that attitude towards us?

In a country like N. Korea...YES.

There is no freedom there. And no one forced him to go there. In fact our State Dept tells us NOT to go there.

Anyone think that if he'd have just asked for a propaganda banner, that they might have just given it to him? After all, isn't the purpose of propaganda to spread it? What better than to have it plastered in all the newspapers around the world. They could have spun that with the local citizens in so many ways.

Instead, we'll just steal it. Then he gets a whole other way to spin it. I'm sure their press is playing up the ugly American, just take what they want angle (if not, they should be). And then there's the lawless American youth-thugs, just running wild....well, that's kinda true though... Of course it's going to be politicized...that's what happens to everything.

But most importantly, there is a deterrent to this crime..bet the next student that goes there doesn't steal an extra breath of their oxygen. At least if they were deserving of being admitted to college.

The article described him and his group as “intellectual risk-takers”.
Well he took his "risk" by trying to steal a poster.

This is pretty much sums things up. If I were to "visit" NK, I'll smile, keep my eyes open and speak only when spoken to, keep my thoughts to myself, and obviously NEVER steal anything !

I do feel bad for this fellow.....but he's guilty of being about as stupid as one person could ever possible be. You're in the most repressive country on the planet.....and you intentionally commit a crime ?

It's obvious his frontal lobe wasn't fully developed yet....but at it should be by the time he gets out of prison. He's got a long time to think about the cost/benefit ratio of his impulsive action.
