I mean really. Maybe they should have done their homework on the derby before protesting. It feels that no matter the event, it's racist as long as white people are involved.

here will not be a Kentucky Derby party at Dartmouth College this year because some students allege that one of the nation’s most prestigious horse races is racist.

And fair warning – before reading further you might want to make a batch of Mint Juleps. You’re going to need it.

Back in 2015, a group of Black Lives Matter protestors targeted an exclusive Kentucky Derby party hosted by the ladies of Kappa Delta Epsilon – calling the event overtly racist and “recreating an Antebellum South atmosphere on the Ivy League campus.”

The protestors accused the party of being a “bastion of racism, exclusion and oppression.” They chanted, “What is Derby? It’s the face of genocide” and “What is Derby? It’s the face of police brutality.”

If they don't want to party then they don't have too. I don't know how this is a controversy as everyone is just going to call these college feeble-minded people etc. They didn't say that others can't celebrate it. If you don't pay attention to them not having a party because of an outrageous BLM protester it will probably benefit your health not being angry at something that doesn't affect your life that even if it did you couldn't do anything about it.

Okay...calling it genocide is pretty stupid. There was never a genocide on blacks in America. The Native Americans are the ones that have been a victim of genocide in this country.

I live in Louisville. Not being a homer but it IS the most prestigious race in the world. Everyone should visit the derby museum. It brings tears to your eyes.

Let them protest. We don't care.

As an aside... The first jockey to win on Aristides was black

They're still having a party - they caved in to changing the theme. Won't call it a Derby party because horse racing is oh-so offensive to a few special snowflakes @ Dartmouth.

From the article above and this one http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2016...aced-it-with/:

Quote:
To right the terrible injustice -- the sorority ladies met with members of the university’s Afro-American Society...

Shortly thereafter, Kappa Delta Epsilon decided to change the Kentucky Derby theme “because of its racial connotations.”

“[It is] related to pre-war southern culture,” KDE vice president Nikol Oydanich told The Dartmouth newspaper. “[The] Derby was a party that had the power to upset a lot of our classmates.”
What doesn't upset a lot of special snowflakes these days?

Quote:
And by “pre-war southern culture,” I reckon the young lady was referring to the Civil War.

There’s just one minor flaw in Kappa Delta Epsilon’s reasoning – the first running of the Kentucky Derby was held in 1875 – during Reconstruction.

That’s right, racing fans. The Kentucky Derby did not commence until 10 years after the war had ended. And for what it’s worth, Kentucky was officially neutral during the War Between the States.
Quote:
In fact, the sport was dominated by black jockeys from its founding until 1904, when African-Americans were banned from the event.
Quote:
But, nevertheless, the new theme will be Woodstock, which Oydancich says was “overwhelmingly” supported because it is “more related to ideas of peace, music and love associated with its namesake festival.”

Ironically, Woodstock, the 1969 festival known for its abundance of alcohol, will not receive the same treatment later this spring when the Dartmouth sorority hosts its party because the KDE is currently under social prohibition, so they are alcohol-free.

I support a very frank dialogue about racism in our country. But there is a point at which intelligent people must be getting embarrased by the targets of some of those self-appointed "justice seekers".

This is up there with those folks who thought it would be cool to disrupt Sunday brunches.

"The War" never ended for these Social Justice Warriors, the delicate Snowflakes that need their 'safe spaces' and are desperate for A Grand Cause in order to be relevant. Never forget that the "activists" that direct the Snowflakes use their 'activism' as a Career. Lot's of money to be made as a Leader of the Social Justice Warriors - George Soros has always funded them very well.

They think Jim Crow Laws are still in existence, the don't seem to understand that Legalized Abortion is the Law of the Land and has been since 1974 (long before most of them were even born) - they have no clue that Birth Control pills are readily available (unlike when I was 20 and you had to be married to get them). In their Pea Brains - Civil Rights Laws were never passed and Affirmative Action doesn't exist. They have no clue that Food Stamps are called 'Food Stamps' because they WERE "stamps" in a booklet that you used to buy certain qualifying foods to Supplement nutrition ...... now they are just FREE Credit Cards and used on Cruise Ships and in Casinos.

Beating horses with a whip so they can run in a circle would top my list of beefs with the Derby but whatever floats your boat.

The Fox news story didn't have the whole story, how unusual:

"...In the years following the Civil War, black jockeys dominated horse racing at a time when it was America’s most popular sport. African-American riders were the first black sports superstars in the United States, and they won 15 of the first 28 runnings of the Kentucky Derby.

...The rising tide of institutional racism that swept across Gilded Age America finally seeped into the world of horse racing. Jim Crow was on the ascent, and the U.S. Supreme Court itself blessed segregation in the 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson decision. Emboldened by the societal changes, resentful white jockeys at northern raceways conspired to force blacks off the track, in some cases literally. During the 1900 racing season, white jockeys in New York warned trainers and owners not to mount any black riders if they expected to win. They carried out their threats by boxing in black jockeys and riding them into—and sometimes over—the rails.

...By 1904, black riders had been virtually banned from the major racetracks, including Churchill Downs, and the complexion of the Kentucky Derby had been changed forever. Black participation dwindled, and no African-American rode the race between 1921 and 2000, when Marlon St. Julien guided Curule to a seventh-place finish.

Barred from the United States, African-American jockeys took their talents to Europe. ..."

The Kentucky Derby

I'd like to visit the Derby museum. The protesters did their homework, I'm sortof surprised Tré Goins-Phillips didn't research this story better - the way he reported the Kentucky Derby's history is misleading.
