Permanent sterilization (let's assume that it is truly irreversible) may have some unwanted outcomes, as such extreme measures usually have. As a generalization people without children are more self centered; in some ways, they never fully mature. People without children often don't care as much about future generations because they have no vested interest. America is already veering toward hedonism, this would accelerate the pace. Essentially we would be creating a whole generation of adults that don't have much to lose.
Also as someone else mentioned, in America we don't truly have poverty except in the case where someone chooses to be truly poor and not have their basic needs met, or they are unable through mental illness or incapacity of getting the help to get their basic needs met. Other than that, no one is truly poor in America. Go to the Democratic Republic of Congo or Zimbabwe, to see true poverty.
Wow! People who have children are the ultimate self-centered. Duh, they want their genes to pass on at other people's expense. How can anybody get more self-centered and more selfish than that?
This world doesn't need more people. The people who don't have children are making the ultimate sacrifice - being unselfish.
No, but the attitude of poverty gets passed from generation to generation. Impoverished people also have a much higher fertility rate than everybody else.
Metro, you need data to make such A counter consensus statement.

You are both being kind of silly. People choose to have children or not have them for all sorts of reasons, some good, some bad.
Not everyone who remains childless is a selfish hedonist. Look at people who devote their entire lives to caring for other people's children, as doctors, priests, missionaries, teachers. Do you really mean, @GearHeadDave, that these people are selfish, and have no interest in the future?
@lifeexplorer, have you told your parents recently that they were self-centered for having had you?

Mine were unselfish. I was a surprise, and they welcomed me, anyway. I'm pretty happy about that.
