By improve I mean turn into primarily what America and Europe has in terms of secularisation, freedom, women's rights etc.? Countries such as Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and counties like that. Do you think they'll ever truly progress, throw Islam, Mohammed and Allah in the dustbin of history and evolve past the 7th century?
I think something really bad must happen first. They aren't going to give up Islam and the desire for a Caliphate without a hell of a fight, and you can't really have a prosperous , thriving nation whilst living under seventh century law and custom.

I think most of them believe their lives are peachy just the way they live now. If anything, they believe they are the normal ones and us Western devils need to conform to their standard of life and culture. If they had it their way the entire world would be Islamic and under caliphate rule.
They are very conservative and dislike being told their ways of thinking are faulty, so they tune constructive criticism out.
Plus, we do not set a good example for them. Our freer society makes room for a lot of things they abhor, so in their minds we do not have a moral high ground.
We are kidding ourselves if we think we can be positive influence in the long run. On their own, it could take centuries before things settle down. Negotiations and deals and giveaways will not do it.
It will take decades to end the problems. A lot of money in that area thanks to oil revenues. Problem is controlled by Royal Families. Not enough going to fundamental rights of citizens of those oil rich countries.
It's the classic Hatfields and McCoys. One generation fanning the fires of hatred and revenge and passing it on to the next. There may always be temporary truces but never permanent. You'd have to erase their memories and eliminate all evidence of the conflict to end the war.
This isn't unique to the Middle East. This kind of internal conflict is everywhere. Those who aspire to leadership know the fastest way to get there is to divide and conquer. Divide the people, get them fighting, then offer to lead them in the fight. Works every time.
