I can understand some conservative leaning sources like Fox News for instance. Fox heavily spins stories and emphasizes certain things over others in order to appeal to conservatives. They usually don't outright lie though. Alex Jones on the other hand is the very definition of conservative fake news. On top of that, the reporting on InfoWars seems to serve no purpose but to fan the flames of polarization and division in this country and promote hatred between ideologies.
Yet, many people trust Alex Jones and InfoWars to provide accurate reporting on events. It shapes their worldview and their reality and our entire country is worse off for it. Why?
It is quite simple really, Alex Jones tells the lunatics on the alt-right exactly what they want to hear and what they already think is true.
To many conservatives the idea that the government is spraying chemicals in the air to make people gay is not viewed as a crazy idea.
The loss of trust in mainstream media has a lot to do with it. Jones has built an empire and partly through entertainment and being animated but mainly because he exposes the hypocrisy of the far left and media in ways that comedians sometimes expose the far right.
Also he appeals to people fed up with both parties as he doesn't tow party line.
Rational people understand government isn't moral. Go ahead and give examples where government is moral.
Government is amoral. As it should be, for better or worse.

btw - Reagan wasn't conservative once he got into office.
They spend money wisely all the time. NASA has lead to an enormous amount of technological innovation that has allowed the private sector to soar. There's your one example. There are plenty of government projects that were cost effective and ended up with a net gain.

He popularized a story about a child sex trafficking ring lead by a Clinton campaign aid happening in the basement of a pizza shop that used a secret network of underground tunnels to transport child sex slaves and his evidence to support this claim was a [stolen] email that has an awkwardly worded sentence.
The number of things he believes in without evidence are too great to count. He's a conspiracy theorist nutcase. He may not be clinically insane but one has to be entirely stupid or paranoid to the point that they may as well just be stupid to actually take anything he says serioulsy.
