Confederate Sharia forces prevented all American people from fully assimilating into American society, black folks were hurt the most, although I agree with you, the former Confederate States 'cut off the nose to spite the face' by failing to assimilate. Public education, libraries, the arts, etc. were stagnant before the War & the reaction towards reconstruction plus the assassination of the American Civil War President, Mr. Lincoln, certainly contributed as factors to explain what "put the former States of the Confederacy far behind".
All of these factors set the stage for future policies targeting groups based on Country of origin.
The South has continued to be affected by such things today. The South refused to fully assimilate back to American society, therefore, hurting everyone there, some people suffering worse than others. The South operated like a dictatorship.
Some diversity is good and some is bad. Some cultures are compatible with others and some are not. I don't want to live next door to KK members or NOI members. Simple as that.

Some diversity is good and some is bad. Some cultures are compatible with others and some are not. I don't want to live next door to KK members or NOI members. I really dont think we need people moving to this country that practice FGM. Simple as that.
But getting what you want isn't inherently good or bad.
Living next door (maybe more figuratively than literally) to KKK members, NOI members or people who practice FGM probably has more long-term positive effects than negative ones.
If one believes that their way of life is inherently better, and not just a preference, than they should want diversity because it will expand that lifestyle to others.
No one believe Donald Trump will become President either.
