I'd say the South Koreans stand in his way, too, and really do not need the US there to protect them.

The US has been asking the S. Koreans to assume command of all military forces in S. Korea for several years, already, but, the S. Koreans have always declined.

The US troops in S. Korea are a tripwire.

Where do you people get your ideas?

The US fought in VN with its hands tied behind its back and totally thrashed the VC and NVA in every battle.

In 1979 Vietnam sent China's PLA packing after kicking China's butt.

In the Korean War, the US lost 54,000 soldiers. China lost probably 500,000 soldiers.

I don't know how good the Chinese military is. Nobody does. They haven't fought anyone in quite a while.

Until they prove themselves in battle, the PLA is not particularly frightening.

Do I want a war with China? Heck no! But, I am not thinking they are some mighty army/navy. If they were, Taiwan would not now still be independent.

Do any of you remember the people saying that the US military was going to have its hands full with Saddam's 4th largest army in the world - battle-hardened from fighting Iran? The US military tore through the Iraqis like a pit bull fighting a bunny rabbit.

Global Times is state-owned (just like almost all news papers in China), but does not represent the government.
Actually it is a paper to please the young nationalists.

Just to clarify the NATO Article 5 situaton in relation to the current crisis.

The United States may ask Nato allies to help out if its airbase in Guam comes under attack from North Korea but cannot insist on it.

Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty enshrines the principle of collective defence, declaring that an attack on one member of the military alliance is an attack on all. It is invoked by the nation under attack. The only time it has been used was after the 2001 attacks on New York and Washington.

The treaty limits the territory to which Article 5 applies to North America, Europe and islands in the north Atlantic that are under the jurisdiction of member states. That limitation prevented Britain from seeking to invoke Article 5 over the invasion of the Falkland Islands.

However if America itself is attacked in any way, every NATO country must come to America's Defence and NATO and all it's member countries will be at war with North Korea.

At the end of Trump's term NK will have made the same progress towards their nuclear capabilities than they would have under Obama, W Bush, Clinton or whoever else was president.

All the bluster changes nothing. Only China has any reasonable change of dealing with NK on the issue and I am not sure even they could curtail the nuclear program.

despite US' military might which nobody denies, it still failed miserably in Iraq. The US is definitely not paper tiger, but there is only so much it is capable of changing in other countries.

exactly what?

China is saying it will not support North Korea if it attacks the US or anyone first, but it will support NK if the US tries to "change regime". It is a reasonable stance. Kim is here to stay no matter what you wish.
