Individual Units of the ARVN performed effectively--but they were at best a 2nd tier force..and they simply did not have the esprit and will to win..when the chips were down.
We propped them up..and when we left..they fell..in large part due to the will of the majority of the Vietnamese people..who were virulently anti-American, by that time.
Most of my friends who served in Vietnam and had experience with the ARVN are quite contemptuous of them..especially the officer corps--who were known to be lazy and corrupt...and quite unreliable in terms of combat support..especially at night.
Your experience may have been different..I cannot speak to it, of course.
