KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A man accidentally shot himself and his wife at an east Tennessee church on Thursday while he was showing off his gun during a discussion on recent church shootings, police said.

Elder members of First United Methodist Church in Tellico Plains were cleaning up about 1 p.m. after enjoying a luncheon held to celebrate Thanksgiving. They began talking about guns in churches, according to Tellico Plains Police Chief Russ Parks.

Statistics show that gun owners and their families are more likely to be injured or killed by guns than those who don't own guns.

Statistics show that a majority of those who get injured or killed by any means know their attacker.

Safety Rule #1: Unless a firearm is disassembled then it is treated as being loaded.

Safety Rule #2: One Never puts their finger on the trigger unless they plan on firing the gun at that moment.

People do stupid things all the time.

They also show that people that own knives are more likely to be cut by a knife than those that do not own them.
Statistics also show that those that own a car are more likely to be in an auto accident than those that do not own them.
Could do this all day, but pointing out the obvious is a waste of time.

Indeed they do and taking a gun to church is really stupid. The guy should be locked up for 30 days or so.

Yes statistics also show that owners of cars are more likely to be in an automobile accident than those who don't own cars.

Owners of horses are more likely to be kicked, bitten or thrown from a horse than Bicycle owners.

Idiots are born everyday. Unfortunately they normally require an accident to learn that they are an idiot.

Stairs is the number one killer in households, if you live in a house with stairs you are more likely to die falling down them.

That is the argument that fosters so much anti gun legilsation, zero guns mean zero gun deaths. When all the bits of legislation accumulate, there will be no guns and no guns deaths. Antis believe that until then, the death of innocents is an acceptable loss to achieve no guns , no gun deaths....and no serious attempt to resolve the complex issue of gun deaths. Most of which are caused by gangs and career criminals.

Laugh at the conclusion in the original post.... Statistics show....... you can reach a conclusion with statistics that may be true but useless.

logic, those who own cars are more likely to die in a car accident

those who own boats are more likely to drown

Those who drink and own a car are more likely to die in a drunk driving accident

Those who own a hammer are more likely to hit their opposing thumb

Those with a fireplace are more likely to burn down their house

Those with a lawnmower are more likely to amputate a toe or finger

Those with sharp pencil are more likely to poke out their eye

Back to the idiot with the gun in church....this proves it is not the gun at fault but the human behind it. So many safety violations broken without knowing the whole story. Other than the pastor no one else should know the guy was carrying.

I worked in a job where occassionaly a firearm was needed in an emergency situation. A gun was not handed out to just anyone there. Only a select few ever were trusted with a gun in tight situations. The reason being that it was the person who was more important than the gun, though the gun played a critical role.
