Beneath those who aspire to something better and often leave, its a poor place. My mom stayed with his family for a little while, this back just before ww2, and said that it seemed like they were even then a century behind.

The people with ambition like my dad leave and seldom come back. When they visited, mom said she had to sit by Dad and distract him before he started on his (deeply negative) feelings about Wallace. He not only didn't see things the way they did, but was perfectly willing to say so in front of them. I was five so all I remember was lots of grass and mud to play in.

When the Civil Rights movement became a force, my parents decided against visiting his family again. Neither were going to feel like hearing all the hate speech and not arguing back.

Interestingly enough, many of my cousins did go into aerospace and ended up moving our of Alabama for jobs, and not going back either.

Why didn't the UN look at California's poverty problem? California has 12% of the US population, but 34% of the US's welfare population.

Yes, I thought CA was the poorest State in the US as measured by the poverty level. The UN won't investigate CA however given it agrees with CA politics.

So, they fled the Democrats that ruled Alabama for so long.

It didn’t enjoy Republican leadership until 2010. Hopefully the Republicans can turn the state around.
