Its the civililian designation for a weapon designed by Eugene Stoner specifically for our military. This is what his kids had to say on his behave:
Our father, Eugene Stoner, designed the AR-15 and subsequent M-16 as a military weapon to give our soldiers an advantage over the AK-47,
After many conversations with him, we feel his intent was that he designed it as a military rifle," his family said, explaining that Stoner was "focused on making the most efficient and superior rifle possible for the military.
He died long before any mass shootings occurred. But, we do think he would have been horrified and sickened as anyone, if not more by these events
Its to be noted that Eugene Stoner never personally owned an AR-15, he also never once used it for hunting or personal defense. The inventor of the AR-15 / M-16 specifically intended it to be a weapon of war and openly said its a weapon of war. Hopefully this puts this discussion to rest.
I'm in that camp. I think training, education and certification is a great way to help, not just for access but for the sport as well.
How do you enforce training and education on the masses who don't care?

Logic would dictate, that for something to be labeled "weapon of war", they should be used in them. When the military was still using 1911 handguns, they then would fit that description. A pre ban AK, SKS, or M1 Garand could be considered one.

Its shares 98% parts compatibility with an M4. The only difference between the 2 rifles is the selector switch. Its inventor even said he intended it for the military. Makes sense, why would you need access to 30 rounds of 5.56mm in any civilian scenario?
