That's the heart of it. I'd go so far to say that the massive abuse of the H-1B visa and obsession with cheap labor by US companies is one of biggest sources of social unrest in the USA today. Good, hard working Americans can't get stable, good paying jobs to support themselves and families because there's this over-supply of cheap labor from India that treasonous corporations like Disney or FB prefer to hire instead, so we have millions of Americans drowning in student loans they can't pay back, unable to get healthcare since it's linked to a full-time job in the US or unable to start a family, which leads to rage and US society falling apart. When people are secure and working in full-time jobs that cover cost of living and support their families, they're less prone to go on violent rampages or support political extremism.

What makes things worse is the stupid unemployment stats in the US don't even bother to note the problem. They just omit the nearly 100 million Americans who've dropped off the labor force from unemployment rolls, or count a Master's degree computer programmer temping at Starbucks as "employed", failing to realize that there's something seriously wrong when talented, hard-working programmers send out 1,000 resumes and can't get a good job anywhere in their own country. History tells us eventually this kind of corruption by the elites against majority of the population leads to a lot of bloodshed and horror and never ends well. But the dumb ideology of neoliberalism, of racing to bottom and trying to reduce American wages to 3rd world levels that come nowhere near enough to afford American costs of living, remain blissfully ignorant of what's coming. The H-1B and visas like it are nothing more than ways to bring in indentured servitude and undermine the living wage and job stability that 99.9% of Americans need to survive, it's treason against the American people and it will not end well.

And yes...people on non-immigrant visas shouldn't buy houses. It's foolish.

The only south Asians I see driving old Toyotas are the ones who have been here 20+ years. They're not flashy.

As numbers grow, the community grows in confidence and mindset changes. Just another day, I saw two of my friends on Facebook in front of their new houses. One in Lubbock and another one in Louisiana. One of them is on 3 year OPT after University, not even H-1B.

Earlier people used to wait for Green Cards before buying House. Now as the wait is super long, the attitude has changed. It is also about "Keeping up with the Joneses" attitude. Other people in the community are buying houses, they also will do it. Some people think that why to pay so much Rent if we can have a house on equal mortgage payment !!

Previous generation of Indian immigrants were not flashy. They were content with old Toyota Camry, Grandmothers (6 month alternate shift) making food and taking care of children while being cramped in a Desi apartment society. They used to invest their Dollars in buying property in india but sky-high land rates in India has curtailed such ambitions of present generation Indian Americans. They have started spending in better cars and houses in USA. They are not thinking about returning back-children are USA citizen anyways.

Them spending the money here as opposed to sending it all back is actually one of the rare positive things in this tragedy. Of course I'd prefer the US workers get (and spend) the money here.

Back in the 1990s I was ok with the H1B, but recently I have seen things which have completely turned me against it.

Did you get a green card or have some job issues ?? Usually I have seen people turning against H1B once they have the green card and feel "superior" to the H1b "lowlives"

ha ha ha I dont belong to either of those categories. I am just sharing my observations as an immigrant. Constructive criticism will help immigrants to assimilate and abide by the laws of the country. Natives will also understand them better and see them in a positive light hopefully if it turns out beneficial for them.

Unfortunate to have this controversy but partially they are also responsible for that. No society will accept their people to be replaced in jobs just like that in the name of visas. They are blocking the future path of genuine immigrants or talented people.

This is not against India or immigration.

Abuse is something that needs to be stopped. I know one person who fits all these - Got a green card using the EB1 loophole even though he cannot even cspeak English clearly, has a QA wife who surely doesnt have any IT experience and gets a 6 figure job doing nothing most of the year.

I can only just watch waiting for my turn like anyone else.

Fresh case filed against TCS for discrimination against American employees.

https://economictimes.indiatimes.com...w/65942416.cms

Bloomberg has published a good article that around 7 Cases are coming up for Hearing in Courts for alleged discrimination. Should a court rule that Tata Consultancy’s and other consulting firms’ use of those visas violates anti-discrimination laws, it could force the companies to change their long-standing hiring and business models.

Companies are using these visas to replace American workers as they can hire these people at lower wages. Check today's news on the Wells Fargo layoffs.

Big Banks are using outsourcing, visas as cost cutting measures to bring more money for shareholders. Wells Fargo share prices rose when they announced layoffs !! The bonus packages and jobs of top management depends on what they bring for shareholders. Employees and common public who bank with them get the shaft.

What is the solution? Form Worker Unions, that is Socialism and bad !!

Bank with Local Credit Unions- this is what many people are doing.
