Not rude to me at all, in fact, I was very welcomed by the people I interacted with. They have a much better understanding of the world than most Americans, who don't even know what States capitals are, and what States border Canada.
You mean a more liberal misunderstanding of the world. America is about the size of the European continent stretching well into Russia and has about the same number of "states". I bet many Europeans can't name and place every country in Europe off the top of their head.
This was the warning I received when I announced my upcoming trip to friends and clients. "There are roving bands of Muslims", said one. "You won't even recognize London", said another. Then there are the news reports of the swarms of refugee rapists. Well, I just returned from my trip to Rome, San Marino, Venice, Monaco, Paris and London and I'm happy to report that all of the warnings are absolute BULLPUCKY. I walked ALL OVER these cities during my visit and I didn't see a single example of the supposed horrors that I was warned about, and I LOOKED for them. So, ignore the fear mongers and go ahead and book that vacation. You'll have a wonderful time. Just watch out for those obnoxious American tourists.
My own experiences are the same.
The likelihood one will become a victim of violence in the USA is substantially higher than most places in Europe.

Oh, I bet you they can. Europeans have long been very, very aware of the outside world. I know my European cousins are far more aware than even I am of international affairs, and I am interested in that kind of stuff.
But then when I try and explain where I live, I have to reference Montana, and many Americans I speak to are not quite sure where that is.
Now, quick, tell me which State has the longest international border.

Actually you are quite WRONG about that - which just goes to prove the point that many (probably most actually) rightwing Americans (apparently including YOURSELF) are pretty clueless about Europe - which explains why they think it is such a dangerous place. Violent crime can happen anywhere, but it's FAR more common in the US than anywhere else in the "western" world.

This says more about your friends than Americans in general. Even when I live in conservative, small town Ohio, when I told people I was going to France and England, people were simply interested or envious.

Well I am well traveled and have met plenty of rude Europeans. Swedes are among the most rude as a group, so you avoid them rather than be forced to tolerate them.
As for not knowing every state capital. Really that is your measure? We have a different measure. Mine would be able to do basic math in their head, or reading comprehension or many other useful things.

To me, the general European attitude is one of rude arrogance.

Ken
I'm wrong about what? That America is almost as large as the entire continent of Europe and there are about 50 independent states and of course 50 US states. Europeans are quite ignorant about America. Americans don't international travel as much because of the size and variety of America, 2 oceans and a crappy southern neighbor. Europeans are just as ignorant about America. For example they might think they could take a day or weekend car trip from NY or DC to the Grand Canyon. They don't have 400 years of experience of living with racial diversity, etc.
I never said anything about Europe being dangerous but it is getting more dangerous and unstable as the 3rd world migration increases.

Knowing your country is paramount or you end up getting politicians who tell you what you should know. Not for this cowboy. I've travelled through all the States except Pennsylvania, Vermont, Rhode Island and Hawaii. You get a perspective beyond your own little corner of the country. You should try it sometime.
