Until some uber-fascists take over the association and change it into something worse.
In ours they can't change very much. Big changes require approval of 51%, 75%, in some cases, 100% of membership. Even 51% is nearly impossible to get.
in my first one now.. never again...……..can only have my garage door open for immediate egress??? are you kidding me...…….
As someone who sits on an HOA, you can make whatever rules you want, but how are you going to enforce them?
You can make dumb ass thinks like your garage door rule, but the law (in Texas) states that with any warnings/violations the violator has 10 days to remediate the situation. So you have 10 days to make sure that garage door is closed.
I get the spirit of some of these things, but enforcement is impossible. Our neighborhood one is fireworks. County allows them, HOA doesn't. Sherriff doesn't enforce HOA bylaws, and you pop fireworks, then you have 10 days to stop doing it once you receive notice from the HOA. Well duh, that's never an issue anyways. Really you just need to have agreed standards of behavior and try not to have people be *******s.
Communist and socialist are code words that conservatives use to attack anything that would help regular people. They only care about the rich, I mean "job creators"
If the HOA took over ownership of everyone's house or condo, that would be communism. Instead, it's more like a representative democracy. You get to vote on board members to represent you, but you do have to pay your taxes (HOA fees). Just like with the country, if you don't like the way it's being run you can vote for someone else, or move elsewhere.

Seems a little extreme. I know a lot of neighborhoods have rules against parking RVs in the driveway and things like that. One thing that always gets me is when I drive into a neighborhood where everyone has a 3 car garage, yet every house has 2 or 3 cars parked in the driveway. It just looks trashy; that's what the garage is for.
I am the president of our HOA. I was elected by our community to the board of directors, as were our other board members. We have fixed terms of office, just like any other elected politicians. Our activities are governed by state laws that are updated every legislative session in our state.
So HOA's are not socialist or communist, they are democratically elected and republican in terms of their decision making.
Why didn't you add DICTATORSHIP as a choice? This is what they are, after all.

From a president of an HOA? PLEASE
I'll paint my home the color I choose, not you. I will build additions, to code, as I see fit - not you. I will not pay for an HOA to determine what I can and cannot do to MY PROPERTY.
