If youre in an area with bad drivers, then move. Bad drivers are usually geographic with more congested areas.
There are bad and/ or impaired drivers everywhere.

Why? Speed and of by itself has nothing to do with distracted/aggressive driving.
Right, but speed has everything to do with the time a driver has to react to an unexpected event on the highway. It is also directly correlated to the severity of a collision. Actually it is correlated to the square of the speed, so increasing your speed by 10% increases the forces in a collision by much more than that.
It's the reason why traffic deaths went up after they got rid of the 55 mph law many years ago. Deaths have gone down in recent years because cars are more crashworthy.
Do I ever disobey the speed limit? Absolutely, and it is a stupid habit. Driving on the highway is the most dangerous thing we do every day.
I never thought I would say this, but it is time for more severe traffic regulations. I might even go so far as say I would be okay with speed cameras on the highways only. Aggressive driving is out of control coupled with distracted driving, and the roads have become a war zone. Really it is time for law enforcement and the government to do something.
I think incremental improvements to computer aided driving technology that eventually leads to something like a self driving vehicle is a more rational approach that won't require as much societal upheaval.

Results vary across the country. Some areas are vastly worse than others in those regards.
You could start by reaching out to your local law enforcement and politicians that could focus or increase enforcement.
Or better yet, allow drivers to press charges against reckless drivers for endangering their lives. Bring your dash cam to the police station, download video, fill out form with offenders license plate number, offender is fined.

Really? Speed can be a contributing factor if the driver is already aggressive. Kind of the same as guns in an of themselves have noting to do with murder. My point being, with most things it's the intention of the human that is the root cause.
Distracted driving is an increasingly serious issue.
I have never been pulled over for a traffic violation and have never had a parking ticket because I comply with laws and ignore my phone while driving. I live near some communities with posted speed limits of 25 mph. It is a challenge to comply and I do.
I acknowledge that 30+ years ago, 9 months pregnant, 100 degrees, no AC in the car, I zoned out and snapped to in the middle of an intersection, with other cars screeching to a halt, having blown a red light. I am grateful that there were no collisions and no one was hurt.
I deserved a ticket and would have had no issue with being cited. As it was, my negligence was not observed by LE.
To this day, I feel shamed by my own negligence.
Pay attention, even when you think you are are paying attention.
Your example is one of those "crap happens" moments that have happened to most drivers once over the years.
The bigger problem is the conscious decision to do things like drink, drive aggressively and of course cell phone use. There are major educational campaigns around cell phone and drinking and driving so that's a good thing.
I'm constantly seeing rear-ending accidents in traffic and know the vast majority of those are cell phone related, I've witnessed it first hand several times.
My car has hands-free so I can send texts or make phone calls but it's no different than just having a conversation with a passenger. I do NOT look at my phone while driving unless I'm stopped at a red light and then only a quick glance.
