I am sure there are a lot of definitions but my in my opinion, today's "liberal" is someone that realizes you can not stand still. The world changes. Environments change, politics change, the economy changes. In order to survive you can not take morals and attitudes that are 50+ years old and try to apply them to today's or tomorrows world. You have to adapt to survive and you have to try to be smart about it. It does not mean you will always succeed but you try and keep what works and modify or change what does not. Saying "this is the way we have always done it' just does not work any longer.
Been through this before. I keep going back to the dictionary definition (Merriam Webster):
Liberal: "one who is open-minded or not strict in the observance of orthodox, traditional, or established forms or ways"
Conservative: "one who adheres to traditional methods or views"
I find these definitions still apply. Note, there are no value judgments in the above. There are good things about traditional ways, and also sometimes change is good.
I'm not really sure. It is possible to be both liberal and conservative, with the choice dependent on the particular issue. For example, one can be a business conservative and a hawk, but also favor ethnic tolerance and a social safety net. How would you characterize that person? I don't know many people who are hard core liberals or dyed-in-the-wool conservatives.

Which makes Trump one of the most liberal presidents we've had.

A liberal is one who takes essentially favorable view of human nature, and skeptical view of formal institutions, be they public or private. Liberals value the advancement of the individual, while regarding advancement of the group as being purely incidental. "Group" can mean village, city or nation. This is why liberals take an internationalist view, or as today might be termed, the "globalist" view. Liberals would be skeptical of any restrictive law, be it a restriction on abortion or on guns.
The chief difference between modern liberals and modern conservatives isn't over the "size" of government, but its geographic extent. Conservatives like strong local government, moderately strong state government, weak federal government and nonexistent international government. Liberals as basically the reverse.
Much of that is hogwash. I am considered a liberal on here. I am for abortion, not pro-illegal, for capital punishment, I don't favor man-hating feminism, not anti-white as I am white, have no issue with equal treatment of the LGBT crown, not pro-Muslim but not anti-Muslim either, do agree with equal-pay, I am very environmentally conscious but I am so-so on the socialist ideal.
Funny thing about socialism, most Trump supporters are also for socialism. They just don't want to admit it. They love big government, love their Medicare/Medicaid/Tricare, love dolling out big bucks to the military (the biggest socialist part of our government), and love their social security.
There is nothing socialist (at least in the real definition of the term) about any of those things. The military, like other public works, was never meant to be provided by private interests even in the most laissez faire types of government. Medicare and Social security are forced savings/pooled cost programs run by the federal govt and no most republicans don't love them. However, if you are forced to pay in your would be an idiot not to use the benefits. If polled conservatives you would find that most would prefer to use the confiscated money in their own way.

Huh? You mean conservatives?
