I bring her up because she is also the wife of a former vice president. For Jill Biden to use "Doctor" in other but a professional setting is gauche, imho.
Your lawyer example is a good one. My husband's degree is JD. Juris Doctor. He would never, ever use the term "Doctor".
That’s fair.
Although I’ve never known Doctors in academia to NOT go by doctor. I thought that was routine. Biden is an educator, I thought.
We always called professors who had their doctorate degrees 'Dr.' so this is not unusual. Why should she be any different?
What makes me laugh are people who get honorary degrees and then with an air of superiority go by Dr. (think Maya Angelou) as though they earned the damn thing.
I swear it's ridiculous, every time this woman gets introduced she insists on being introduced as DOCTOR Jill Biden.
I know over 500 physicians, and NONE of them ever insists on being called doctor the way she does.
Yes, I know she has a doctorate in education. Yes I know that PhD and EdD graduates are technically able to call themselves "doctor"
But I swear there's some kind of low self esteem going on with this woman because I've never heard of anybody who is so ridiculous about this doctor title.
we have several phd academics (english, gender studies, biology, physics, and others) in the family. they are all very pretentious about their phd and use 'dr.' on their personal correspondence and in their personal life. the medical doctors and surgeons i know personally, and i know many, never use dr. in their personal life.
I am a physician and never want to be called "doctor" by anyone.
I even have "Master Yoda, M.D." on my x-ray lead. My lab coat has no name at all on it- just the institution name.
Being a "doctor" is not that big of deal; I think people who insist upon it are high strung and lack self confidence. It is peculiar as well that most chiropractors (who are not doctors at all) insist upon being called "doctor". When I run across those jerks who want to be called "doctor", I insist they call me "medical doctor" to emphasize what an a**hole they are.
The new slight of hand for Nurse Practitioners and Nurse Anesthetists who get a doctoral degree in nursing (many online from some BS place like "Capella") insist on being called "doctor". I can't tell you how many patients are mad as hell when I tell them their "doctor" is not a doctor!
Snobs want the title but don't want (or cannot) to put forth the time and effort to get the actual degree.

Who says she insists on it? It's the formal and standard address for someone with a doctoral degree and people who respect education use the term to address those who have attained one.
