Problem with npr. Npr post plenty of biased, on sided false topics in the recent years on social justice and covid in recent years. Some of their topics are cringy worthy to listen to except for the great jazz music.

despite my right wing nut job status, I am an avid listener of NPR and WNYC, which is part of it. I listen to them to gain perspective on how the liberal mind works so if they aren’t affiliated with public media, then what should the P stand for?

No. Government grants are a small part of NPR's budget.
"In 1967, Congress passed the Public Broadcasting Act, which formed the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). CPB is an independent, private nonprofit organization which receives most of its funding from the federal government."

So they get their money from a private non-profit that was formed by the government to give them money and is funded by guess who? The government.

Twitter gives NPR ‘state-affiliated media’ label

https://nypost.com/2023/04/05/twitte...d-media-label/

Twitter attached a “state-affiliated media” label to National Public Radio’s official account on Tuesday — a designation that is also given to government-controlled outlets such as Russia Today or China’s Xinhua news agency.

Twitter CEO Elon Musk highlighted the move in a Wednesday tweet, sharing language in Twitter’s guidelines that defines “state-affiliated media” as “outlets where the state exercises control over editorial content through financial resources, direct or indirect political pressures, and/or control over production and distribution.”

“Seems accurate,” Musk tweeted...
EXPLICITYLY breaking their own rules.

Up until a few hours ago, Twitter explicitly listed NPR along with the BBC as exceptions to this categorization.

On wednesday, the day after they broke their own rules, NPR was removed from exception list leaving only the bBC.

Yesterday Musk was already backpedaling

Like everything elon touches, it's a cluster fart and a PR nightmare

I dont have twitter (or any of the other social medias for that matter) and so dont listen to NPR. But I got a chuckle from this. Wallow in a mudhole and squeal about it, dont be surprised when someone calls you a pig.

by his own admission, musk has lost around $20B - which he can afford with a smile...so he is not motivated by PROFIT to do what he is doing. Could it be after all these years he has a streak of altruism in him? I mean I know he is a colossal jerk to work for/with..but still

This is another good point. Nothign wrong with listening to alternative media. But crap. It is cringe worthy. However. I have to say this. Npr does not represent the interest of the state, by state and from the state. Most of the interest from npr comes from academia and the wealthy to look down on the uncivilized, poor racists, exists, bigoted, transphobic Americans. The interest of the npr only benefits a small polity of Americans who have money, very collegiate, and white who feel bad for blacks, natives, women and stuff but feel great about being an ally, driving an electric car.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NPR#Funding_in_the_2000s

Looks like through various grants, indirect and direct funding NPR gets ballpark 1/4 of their money from the govt. or extensions thereof. The rest if donations (especially McDonalds founder money) and then normal income stuff licensing, ads etc.

Side Note: "Direct or indirect political pressure" is a point I've brought up here several times with regards to congress pressuring groups like META, Twitter etc. and their own internal biases and before anyone gets up on a high horse, this was also a factor in Tucker\FOX not wanting to anger Trump by refuting his election theft stuff.

Wasn't NPR the one who said they 'didn't have time' to report the Hunter Biden laptop story weeks before the election? Oh, right. They were.
