What’s the common denominator here?
Yes you are correct about the last update but they made the mistake of leaving the terms for claiming asylum in. But that update only addressed one thing most of our laws are from the 1965 Immigration Act and it is way overdue for an update.

"To obtain asylum through the affirmative asylum process you must be physically present in the United States. You may apply for asylum regardless of how you arrived in the United States or your current immigration status." https://www.uscis.gov/humanitarian/r...-united-states

So why do you think they take the chance and try to enter illegally which is what has been occurring. The border is closed not open and as you can see apprehensions are way up https://www.statista.com/statistics/...border-patrol/.

Time for Congress to update the law already and remove these loopholes....

Breaking: Administration approves illegal immigration for Venezuelans
I hate to break it to you, but they can't be illegal if they are approved, because the approval makes them legal.

Also, your article says it concerns only those who are already in US, and only for 18 months.

Would you rather have them sit around and do nothing, or work? If they are waiting for their ICE court date, I'd rather see them work.

Yes, if they could vote, they would almost certainly vote Republican, but its not about voting.

Make them work until their application is processed (90% are rejected).

I don't get the panic about them voting. NYC is about as blue as you can get. We don't need thousands of new Democratic voters to keep Democrats in power. If you guys were so concerned about them voting, perhaps you shouldn't have sent them to NYC by the busloads.

That is exactly the problem, our laws allow them to seek asylum if they are able to demonstrate they were persecuted because of:

Race
Religion
Nationality
Social group
Political opinion

Our legal process to reach a decision takes years and if people want change then they need to hold congress accountable for either changing the law or adding additional resources to expedite a decision.

Meanwhile, is it better to have them sit around at our expense or working.

Default US granting Venezuelan migrants temporary legal status

Under Biden’s new order, Venezuela will receive Temporary Protected Status, meaning an estimated 472,000 Venezuelans who arrived in the country as of July 31, 2023, will not be forced to leave and can legally work for at least the next 18 months.

While I sympathize with the Venezuelans, and their plight is different then those in most central American nations, this opens the door to more illegal migration.

You have to remember, the left in this nation are trying to promote socialism. Makes sense to import those from a country with a strong history of socialism, of nationalizing businesses, and of government control over their citizens. Since they did nothing to oppose those things in their nation, they will be accepting of the same here.

Just to be clear about this, it isn't as if after 18 months these "migrants" can or will have their work permits revoked and sent back where they came from. This "temporary" status can be renewed infinite number of times.

Salvadorans, Haitians, Syrians, Hondurans and others admitted under TPS have been here for over ten or twenty years, and counting.

These people aren't effing going anywhere, they've effectively "immigrated" to USA, period and end of story.

I know a couple that immigrated here from Venezuela about 10 years ago. He is Venezuelan, she's an American, and had moved there to live with him. They know what socialism is, and they hate it. I'm not sure that importing those that fled from socialism would really help establish it here. They know what Venezuela was prior to Chavez, and they know what it is now.

Critical thinkers understand that if they liked socialism, they would have stayed in Venezuela. They are trying to get away from it, like Cubans wanted to escape it in Cuba. Don't worry, they will almost certainly vote Republican.

Better have them work for the 18 months than sit around and wait for the applications to be processed.

Good to see a critical thinker. You are correct, they are here to get away from it.

i'm far more sympathetic to the plight of venezuelans than most other 'migrants'. i doubt many of them have anything nice to say about the leftist hero oogo chavez. still, we're full up. go somewhere else.

gosh, seems like just yesterday that i was watching c-d leftists defend that tyrant...
