Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson says he is switching political parties citing his disillusionment with Democrats and a desire to lead one of America’s largest cities under the Republican banner.
The former state house representative announced the move Friday in an opinion piece published by The Wall Street Journal that said he plans to vote in the Republican primary next spring and intends to leave his mayoral seat as a Republican after being term-limited in 2027. He blamed Democratic policies for “exacerbated crime and homelessness.”
Quote:
“The future of America’s great urban centers depends on the willingness of the nation’s mayors to champion law and order and practice fiscal conservatism,” Johnson wrote in the editorial. He went on to say he believes the Republican Party shares those priorities.
“In other words, American cities need Republicans — and Republicans need American cities,” said Johnson, who was reelected to a second and final term as mayor in May.
Good to see another independent thinker coming to the light. Black Republicans like him, Ben Carson, and Tim Scott will most certainly continue to make their presence known as more blacks get “woke fatigue” as they see the crime in neighborhoods continually go up.
As much as I'm happy to see someone in his position come to his senses, politically speaking, I don't really like it when politicians switch parties while serving their terms. The people of Dallas wanted a Democrat to be their mayor, and he is retroactively denying them that choice. He should have switched while running for election (or re-election) and let the people decide.

I have less of a problem with the party switch, and more of the perception of it.
He was mayor in 2020, Are the republicans going to see him in a different light now? Because the previous threads about him are still up as far as I know.
And clearly his mayoralty was liked by the people of Dallas, as he won with no opponents. So is he arguing some change in philosophy ?
Any politician that switches parties like this is always suspicious. As a Dem living in Alabama when the GOP implemented a strategy to make the Alabama Dem Party look "For coloreds only" and then tried to court prominent black leaders to also switch by promising them major paid positions, it looks like the GOP is doing the same in Texas, North Carolina and Georgia.

The Democratic party establishment lied to it's voters so therefor the Democratic party are not deserving of unchecked loyalty. The same for any party.

you misused the term woke.
Woke is at best, understanding the reasoning behind something. its not an action.
Democrats on Reddit have total cognitive dissonance as they ramble on in topic after Topic in various States subreddits. They can't see that so many of their policies cause all the problems. Republicans aren't Saints but the Democrat Party is a train wreck right now.
Here's a mathematical equation that's guaranteed to lead to cultural decay:
Letting any immigrants in without vetting + don't enforce any laws and go soft on crime + print unlimited amounts of money using Central Bank magic wands = cultural decay.
All it would take is removing one of these items from the equation and the other two wouldn't be nearly as big of a problem.
