A branch of the US Military is considering eight-year active duty enlistment contracts, in what will be the longest active duty terms for first-timers since the peak of the Global War on Terror.

The United States Space Force is looking to maintain a dedicated personnel base and grow experience, as a way of preventing losing expertise amidst recruiting shortfalls and high turnover across the military.

Chief Master Sergeant of the Space Force John Bentivegna claimed the long terms are because it takes a considerable amount of time to train Space Force Guardians, only for them to leave the service after a 3 to 4-year stint.

“I know eight years is a big commitment to make if you’re 20 years old, 21 years old,” Bentivegna told Air Force Times. “But let me explain to you … the training you’ll get, the opportunities you’re going to get, the experience you’ll have — it takes time.”

This is absurd folks. The commander in chief is turning military service into North Korean military servitude.

No wonder they can’t find new recruits, or keep recruits in.

This is what dictatorship looks like.

Biden is NOT the "Commander in Chief". That title is only given when the United States is in a war. Biden's proxy war in Ukraine does not count.

Yeah, that will really cause an increase in enlistments.

These aren’t bullet stoppers, these are space systems operators, cyber operators, developmental engineers, geospatial, etc.

I’ve seen it many times in the past. Guys join up, do 4 years, and then go to work in the private sector making serious cash, taking all that experience with them, only to be replaced by a kid who hasn’t accrued all the specialty schools yet. Thats a net loss for the US military.

8 years seems about right to me.

Now if you are asking a guy to grab an M4 or M16 and deploy to a combat zone, that’s a whole different thing, and 8 years would be outrageous to demand.

If I was in charge of military recruiting, I would offer a signing bonus of $ 5,000 for two years of military service, $ 10,000 for four years. Two years would be the minimum requirement.

To a young person right out of school, and eight year commitment to an organization they know little about, is not going to go over well at all.

Four years of active service is already too much for a lot of people who regretted their decision to join. You impose an eight year contract on these people, and you will have a lot of disgruntled people, and disciplinary and morale problems

Looks like its just the Space Force right now that is requesting the 8 year stint. It will probably go over pretty good for the ones look to join that service.

For the other services, not so much unless there is serious bonus money, like Nuke or Pilot school.

Good luck finding people sign up for that trap

My initial contract was 4 years of active duty and that was more than enough.

People with 6-8 years contract are in highly specialized MOS with years of training like submariners
