I think it is indicative of a shared loyalty. They aren't full Americans in their own hearts with NO loyalty for White America as they call it. The Uncle Tom syndrome in full force. They are just flexing their control muscles and watching how fast liberals ask how high as they jump.
I find the term extremely offensive. Putting "American" last gives the appearance that the first allegiance is to "African". This reinforces a negative stereotype and does nothing to instill pride in being an American that the black youth sorely need.
No, this is false. Grammatically, "American" is the dominant noun and "African" is merely the descriptive modifier. So in the term "African-American," the first allegiance and dominant identity is American, and the "type of American" is "African."
Having said that, I dislike the term because I believe it is a desperate attempt to avoid the negative associations with "black" by renaming oneself. As Shelby Steele points out, and I agree with him, it is only a matter of time before "African-American" becomes sullied with the same societal problems that have plagued blacks for decades. Then it will be time for a new term to be invented.
The correct terms for race are "caucasian," "negro," and "asian." I understand why "negro" has bad connotations because that was the term used during very racist times (along with "colored.") I can't understand why anyone would object to "black," however, any more than I object to "white." I never refer to myself in any hyphenated way.

Under no circumstance will she use the term. And, she has had some problems at the University for not using "African-American" rather than Black.
Then again, she loves Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity. She also loves NASCAR and INSISTED I get her a Confederate Flag beach towel which she takes with her everywhere!

I think unfortunately you are nursing an identity crisis in her and it will blow up in your face. No one should be carrying around a confederate flag -- sorry -- and I have ancestors from Texas so I have a lot of fondness for southern culture. But I don't see a healthy black young lady embracing the confederate flag.

Well - it was / is totally her decision. She knows what the war was really about (and it wasn't about slavery) -
She doesn't buy into all the "PC" stuff that many tell her (including some professors) she should -
I wish her well. She sounds like an independent minded young lady and it's too bad more kids are not like that.

She was an abused young lady when we became her foster parents when she was about 10. And we encouraged her to explore - to learn - to make up her own mind.
Im happy someone else has read what Roosevelt said. His words apply today as much as in 1915. Too bad the real fools dont see this. He also said "We americans have but one flag, and that is the american flag"
