Is that just another word for "honky"? Am I supposed to be upset and want to fight when I hear it directed at me.

I guess I'm just not up on the whole street slang thing.

It's a slur. Much like "white trash" It's meant as an insult (an "N" word for caucasians)

Wonder if the OP feels stupid yet?

Actually the last person who called me a cracker ended up on the missing persons list.

Being called cracker by a black is a racial slur.

If a white uses a racial slur, N....r, he can be charged with a hate crime.

In your post you said a truck driver used the term toward you.

You can either confront the black man, only if you feel like getting into fight. Or, you can report it to both the police in order to have a record of the event, and to the trucking company, telling them you are going to file hate crime charges against them.

This what the Jesse Jackson's and Al Sharpton's do. Use the law. If it was you using the n word, you wouldn't get away with it. Why should they?

Doesn't quite have the same impact, though. Maybe a weak attempt at some twisted form of name-calling equality?

That is the point. It SHOULD have the same impact. This double standard has got to stop if we ever going to rid ourselves of discrimination. Until more people complain, it will never change.

The poster should force the issue with the trucking company and the law.

It should be equal. And when most people say the n-word today they are referring to someone who is ignorant like Pacman Jones. The n-word basically means "ignorant" now. But I don't know why white people minding their own business always get called crackers by black rcists down here.
