First of all those sovereign countries WANT us to put MDS systems in their countries so we do NOT look like the Soviets. We look like good allies to great nations who have been sorely put upon by the Russians.
The. Polish. Government. Was. Paid. To. Accept. The. System.
I just envisioned a Polish designed and built missile defense system. It looked like a set of really, really big tennis racquets that were strung with American made carbon fiber.

While reading some posts on this blog, I've come to the conclusion that there are people in this country who have a problem with "minding their own business". Look I'm not trying to be rude but, why can't Europe build their "own" missile defense system. Why is it that the US by way of the US taxpayers, are always bailing the EU out when it comes to military defense? Please, they can afford it! This is one of reasons we have NO money and can't take care of OUR own. The President's decision, in my opinion, is a good one for the simple fact that it is a stronger plan and covers multiple issues, 1) It SAVES us money (we need a lot of that), 2) it saves us time as the previous system would not have been active for another 5-8 years and the bloody thing doesn't work and has been proven, 3) there is a system that actually works. According to Gates and the Deputy Joint Chief of Staff, the new system is directional. This will allow Russia to see the system is pointed southward towards Iran, which is the goal. On top of that, the new system will be in place earlier, 4) although it is speculated that Russia is providing Iran with nuclear intelligence etc., we need Russia's help in neutralizing Iran as the Russians have already forced the closure one of the air bases used to supply our troops in Afghanistan. The US needs the other base to remain open for same reason. The previous system approved by Gates back in 2006, scanned at 360 degrees which would have given it visibility to Russian launch sites. Not a bad thing if we were fighting Russia, and no need to provoke them either, however, it wouldn't help our troops in Afghanistan in receiving much needed supplies if the US continued to play war games with Russia. Further, this new system will be "combined" with Aegis cruisers in the eastern Meditteranian along with "other" sites to contain Iran and protect Israel. Thereby allowing for easier access to Iran's successful long and short range missles. I think I would rather have a system in place that would actually work as opposed to shutting my eyes and crossing my fingers in hopes of an interception from the Bush system.
I'm with the President on this one.

Where do you get your info that the majority of the population in Eastern Europe did not want such a system? Have you ever been to Poland or spoken with a Pole or Czech? HUH? Don't pretend to know what you are talking about.
Yeah, how about you?
I live at the Czech border and visit Poland occasionally. I've got friends in both places.
I work with Poles, Czechs & Germans.
BTW, Rexor lives in Czech.
