Actually pretty much the entire Europe was against it.

Anyway, Russians just announced that they will also scrap the plans for their own missile shield, which was designed to be the answer for Bush's shield. Then of course we woud have been forced to answer that one, and then Russia answer that one, and on and on just like in the good old cold war days.

So what is your opinion - was Obama clueless or calculating when he chose this date to announce?
Only two choices, clueless or calculating?
Interesting world you live in.

How about the research and policy decision was completed and he made an announcement without consideration of anything other than the benefit to the American people.

I don't know, maybe he wanted to emphasize the fact that Russia is no Soviet Union? I agree though that some Poles could perceive this as a rather insensitive move on Obama's part.

And what exactly are we getting in return from Russia?

Russia has already made it clear, no new sanctions against Iran. So, we abandon our allies, once again, for the sole purpose of showing the bad guys how nice we are?
News............ try reading some. Even the fixed corporate kind we have in-country.

What were seeing here is part of a systemic strategy by the far right to keep up the hatred and ferment the violence.

That's all this is about.

As if a high teck missile shield is going to stop a couple of Russian Tank Armies. The only thing threatened by the ending of this boondoggle is the profits of the builders. We, and apparently, the Russians, have figured we have better things to do with the money including not spending it at all.

Poles, Czechs: US missile defense shift a betrayal - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090918/ap_on_re_eu/eu_eastern_europe_missile_defense_22 - broken link)

Poles, Czechs: US missile defense shift a betrayal

It certainly is that.

Quote:
An editorial in Hospodarske Novine, a respected pro-business Czech newspaper, said: "an ally we rely on has betrayed us, and exchanged us for its own, better relations with Russia, of which we are rightly afraid."

The move has raised fears in the two nations they are being marginalized by Washington even as a resurgent Russia leaves them longing for added American protection.
Obama will stop at nothing to curry the favor of bad guys around the world.

I actually agree - pretty much all of Europe was against it, except Poland. (Events in Georgia really rattled their cages)

And don't get me wrong, On first glance I actually prefer the Aegeis plan.

BUT, why on God's green earth did Obama pick the 70th anniversary of the Russian invasion of Poland to announce this?

OH, Cripes Amighty! MORE bleeding heart NeoConfused delusion that America is somehow responsible for protecting the world at Ameicans' expense while whining spending in/on America is SOCIALISM!

Typical NeoConused hypocrisy.

And WHAT a horrible outcome, Russia cancelling their missile plans, OH! the horror!

I think the only thing NeoConfuseds are actually outraged about is the possible decline of their defense contractor holdings

It's even worse than that. In addition to dropping the eastern European version of Star Wars, at the suggestion of Bush's SecDef, we have otherwise totally neglected our national defense:

==>Our fleet of barrage balloons is woefully outdated.
==>The officer class, even in the cavalry, is no longer adequately schooled in swordsmanship, rendering them utterly unfit for close-combat saber attacks.
==>The government has shared vital military intelligence with such longstanding enemies as perfidious Albion, the Hun, and the subjects of the Japanese empire.

How long will Americans stand still for such decisions by the Obama administration?
