There is no reason why American CEOs should be so different from CEOs from other countries. In those countries the CEO ratio of pay to the average worker is much lower - hence the CEO is not raiding the company's bottom line and ALL of the worker's are sharing in corporate profits. If American greed is out of control, someone needs to reign it in.
This is the United States - not other countries. There is no reason - NONE - for us to copy what other countries do.
United States CEO's get paid just fine - the ONLY control on their pay is the OWNERS of the company.
American CEOs should get as much money as they can get their hands on. That's the American way. Don't tamper with it. Plus, a large segment of Americans are rooting for the CEOs!
So. They should be able to rob and pillage at will? Why should they be able to get their hands on as much money as they can while other people suffer in poverty that work their hands to the bone?
'Don't tamper with it'? Even if ridiculously high American CEO wages drag down the company, putting it out of business? Then I suppose the 'American way' is being revealed now - namely in vast numbers of Americans unemployed, and a few rich American dogs with fat Swiss bank accounts.
Couldn't agree with you more. The statement after the OP's really ticked me off, and this is from a conservative. Capitalism taken to extremes is just sick.

Sing it Comrade!
From each according to his ability, to each according to his need!
I agree there is too much of a gap. But I also agree with Greatday in that it is not the government's job to "fix it".
Don't buy their stuff. Don't work for them. Don't buy their stock.
We peons outnumber those elite by great numbers. Yet we moan and groan and whine and line up to buy their crap and work at their companies.
Because as it stands we don't have many other choices HT. I'm about as anti-government as it gets, and I DO NOT trust the government at all.
But, to be honest with you, I am getting tired as hell with this ****e. For some reason, the problem is that people aren't mobilizing enough to campaign against this kind of malfeasance.
I don't have the answer, but something has to be done. I also agree with many here that government isn't the answer, because the government is about as corrupt as it gets.
I'm really, really concerned about this country, and considering moving to Europe. It's an extreme move, but when the corporate lobby and the government are so much in bed together I wonder if the citizens of this country can really overcome this behemoth.
Liberal or conservative really doesn't matter to me. What matters to me is that we rid ourselves of this corruption and greed.
Corporate CEOs are paid way to much; often more than they could even spend in a lifetime. Yet they want to accumulate more and more. It's like an addiction. They don't even need this money and all the while people in the US and around the world are starving. It's freaking unbelievable to me that these people couldn't part with some of what they've earned to help others.
I'm not ignorant. I realize that many of these people donate a LOT of money to charity.
But the age old problem still exists. I wish that I had an answer. God help us all.
The United States government is not constitutionally able to dictate what a private company can or cannot pay their employees.
And, if the owners decide to compensate their CEO 10's of millions of Dollars, that is find. That is not "greed".
Frankly, you sound envious. You sound like you only wish YOU could make that much.
I'm not envious, because I am not greedy. I have worked hard all my life to create my own success, and maybe that's why I identify with the workers who are the ones who truly propel a company's success. You seem to think that anyone who wishes to see corporate profits distributed fairly among the workers is envious - that's your your problem, not mine.
The GOVERNMENT should NEVER be involved with putting any type of pay caps - CEO's or otherwise, on private business.
The ONLY group who should decide how much the CEO gets is the owners of the company - the stockholders in the case of a corporation.
$$$ rule. Money money money.. That makes the world go round. Let's get all the money we can while we can. Yeah, that's the spirit.
