No real surprise here. Remember this study doesn't show that all conservatives on average have a lower IQ than liberals, but conservatives that identify themselves as social conservatives AKA Christian Taliban tend to have a much lower IQ than liberals and conservatives that are socially liberal. Explains a lot about some of the post and posters on this board.

Leftists believe in big government whatever. It doesn't have to fit neatly under a socially conservative or socially liberal ideology. If you support a federal ban on abortion, you are a leftist. If you support wiretapping, you are a leftist...and so on. Anything that violates one's freedoms when they do not affect another individual is leftist. Abortion is a little muddier because you are arguably dealing with another human life. But, banning gay marriage is definitely 110% leftist. This helps to clearly distinguish regimes such as the Nazis and Soviets, BOTH of whom were overwhelmingly leftist governments. For further information:

I don't want to put words into anyone's mouth, but I think I understood what he meant. To be socially conservative is to imply that government should play a role in deciding what you can or can't do [and] with whom. This is an example of the expansion of the role of government. Expansion of the role of government is a leftist principle, even if most leftists aren't socially conservative.

I think I can agree with the OP. I completely identify myself as a conservative, but thinking that two people of the same sex shouldn't not be allowed to marry and/or thinking that what they do is your business scarifices a few IQ points.
