I have a choice of whether or not to purchase whatever is being hawked on commercials. Last time I checked, Pepsi wasn't able to reach into every working American's paycheck to extract it's operational expenses.
Well, I keep hearing how 47% of people don't pay any income taxes anyway, so they wouldn't have been affected by the raise in any case. And it's not just you and not just Pepsi. Advertising is a multi-billion dollar industry and every penny of it is sucked out of consumers' pockets in the form of prices that are higher than what they would need to be otherwise. There is no actual difference between consumers and taxpayers, you know. Same bunch. But the bottom line is you don't mind paying many billions for advertising, but are all jacked up over a million for Congress. Makes sense...
Plus their mailing expenses, car expenses, health benefits, and a fabulous retirement package..
Mailing expenses for official mail they do get. Rental cars at government expense are an option in the House only. Fewer than a third use it. They tend to be the ones with difficult districts to travel or meet in. Does the term "company car" have any meaning for you? There is a clinic in the Capitol that members can get free medical services in. Otherwise, they have the same health benefits packages as any federal employee. Ditto on the retirement package. The Congressional program is slightly modified from the system for the normal federal employee because those don't have to get re-elected every few years. The idea of the Congressional retirement system being golden parachute "fabulous" is uninformed hyperbole.

Yes, they are all so greedy, these people who just recently voted 402-15 to deny themselves even a tiny pay increase next year. Ever looked at a graph of Congressional salaries in constant dollars? It's fallen by about 30% over the past 40 years.
$174K isn't really that much money nowadays especially to maintain two different homes and the other expenses associated with being a member of Congress. For all the work that many of these men and women put in each day, I think the compensation is a bit low. I do believe that Senators should be paid more than Representatives though...
And then there are elections...which aren't cheap by any means! Yes you will campaign to raise money but quite a chunk may come from your own pocket as well.
and each earmark for pork deducts $1 from their annual pay. LOL
Do you even know what an earmark is in this context? Do you know why they exist? Hint: The problem with earmakrs is not earmarks, but abuse of the earmark process. This is what Republicans made famous during the Bush era and what has been cracked down on since the Democrats were put in charge of policing the earmark process.

What an idiotic post! You are comparing our tax dollars that are forcefully taken from us to pay for these leaders raises and pepsi commercials that we do not pay for if WE DO NOT BUY PEPSI!

The only hard work these people do is bicker, rant and oppose any ideas from the opposite party. Meanwhile they drive Government cars, pay for Steak dinners on my dime and delegate most of their "work" to their staffs who we also pay.
