A very good, realistic and balanced article on this topic:

Michael Sam will be in this year's NFL draft. He is projected to go in the middle rounds.
Yesterday he told the nation that he is gay.

If he were on your team, would you root for him?

Sure.

I understand the subject matter just fine.
I still stand by my opinion, as I really do not think what anyone - even a football player - does in his bedroom is newsworthy.

DH played football through college. He had a gay teammate that everyone knew was gay. Declaring it to the media would have changed nothing, according to my husband.

I fail to see whay this is news...
Its news because the Media says it is so.

Before it happens people, please lets not disrespect Number 42 with lame comparisons.

Jackie Robinson was a GREAT, a LEGEND. Until this guy leads his team to a Superbowl Championship, he is still a normal player.

Why wouldn't you pick him for your team? He's led the SEC in sacks, top Defensive End and will probably be drafted between the 3rd. & 5th. rounds during the NFL draft!

I'm sure there are a ton of "Gay" NFL players! They just all hide in the closet! This is 2014 not 1974. I don't care about a football players private life considering the "heterosexual" ones are more scandalous! Just play football!

No doubt an attempt to improve his draft stock... Why on earth do gays feel the need to announce their sexual preference to the world? Are heterosexuals supposed to care?

Dude... just play football. I could give a flip if you prefer hot beautiful women or sweaty fat guys... Seriously.

The whole draft is now about HIM and not the other players. I just really hope my team doesnt pick him. Let one of the other 31 teams get him. (one sentence deleted)

Did he play in the NFL at a time when gay rights were in the national conscience? If the answer is no, that it has nothing to do with the topic at hand.
