Anti-social, withdrawn, loaner, etc., you've heard the negative descriptions laid on quiet or reserved personalities. In contrast, the loud, outgoing and overbearing, personality is considered "happy-go-lucky" "a great personality" and preceived as "normal" and more socially acceptable? Both personalities are at extreme ends of the specrum, yet one is perceived as "normal" while the other is considered "abnormal". Why?
In reality people view both personalities differently.
some like reserved personalities, some like outgoing personalitles.
there is no book somewhere that everyone lives by that says reserved = abnormal, outgoing = normal.

I would say something in between is more normal and as you said, the ones you describe are opposite ends of the spectrum. If loud overbearing and obnoxious were so prevalent, it would not be noticeable. Since those types stand out, it can't be most people.
I could care less what 'others think'. Who makes these so-called rules anyway?
We ALL need to be ourselves and learn to feel comfortable with who we are. . . that being written, IF one truly believes they should change, then more power to them.
I'm comfy with myself and my lifestyle and that's what is important.

Where did you get the idea that loud, overbearing personalities are considered normal? That's not normal at all. Most people find that type of behavior offensive. And no, I haven't heard the negative descriptions laid on quiet or reserved personalities. Why should that be negative? It sounds like you're tuned into the wrong channel. You're assuming these are universally-held views, when they're not.

Look at it this way....
Anti-social, withdrawn, loner, etc...people are more comfortable to keep their mouths shut and appear as a shy introverted geek rather than be the loud, outgoing and overbearing ''happy go lucky'' person who often comes across as an a-hole.

The job market and business world rewards those with the loud outgoing, happy go lucky (positive) personalities. These traits do not make one smarter or a better worker, but yet those candidates are the ones who get the job, get the promotion. You are absolutely right, those who are quieter or introverted are often described in a negative light. I don't have an answer to why, but it goes very deep in our society, the fact that our institutions reward these type A personality traits is just another affirmation of how much society values that type of personality. However the difference between a narcissist and the aggressive go getter sought out by corporate world is very slim or non existent. Ive read before that a majority of higher level bosses and leaders could be diagnosed as narcissists. This kind of explains our society a bit doesn't it?
I disagree. I think introverts are viewed more positively. Extroverts are seen as being pushy, rude, or fake while introverts are viewed as being respectable and hard-working.
Valsteele has gotten it right.People here get giddy with excitement over "obnoxious" , non-clammed-up folks too often.
