Anti-social, withdrawn, loaner, etc., you've heard the negative descriptions laid on quiet or reserved personalities. In contrast, the loud, outgoing and overbearing, personality is considered "happy-go-lucky" "a great personality" and preceived as "normal" and more socially acceptable? Both personalities are at extreme ends of the specrum, yet one is perceived as "normal" while the other is considered "abnormal". Why?
Not all outgoing personalities are loud and overbearing. I don't think all loud and overbearing people are considered happy-go-lucky either. There are pleasant, happy, outgoing personalities, and there are loud, overbearing, bully, miserable personalities. The fact you lump them together is more interesting psychologically. Are you always uncomfortable with people who aren't quiet and reserved?
Keep in mind these attributes are strictly American. Not necessarily the case in other countries and societies. But in American society, the loud and and overbearing personalities are perceived more as "normal" I think because their intentions are clear to see and put out there. You don't have to play guess with a loud social personality. What you see is what you get and as least you know where you stand with them. With more reserved and quiet personalities, people can't make you out and have no idea what your intentions or thoughts are. Thus a lot of misconceptions about these personality types abound such as being passive-aggressive, being very snobby or high falutin', being some secret deranged lunatic, being a geek, or some weirdo creepster.

But this doesn't describe all of us. And those of us who are not fond of a lot of people in their space probably love having dogs and cats as company. They don't judge. Being introverted is being 'shy' or stuck up, it being drained by the bodies around you. It's just a variation of being a human. Humans don't have to be social to be humans. Or get along with dogs.
I've often described an extreme Type-A co-worker of mine as being "abnormal"!!! I've known a lot of people like this but this particular person's aggressive and controlling nature crosses the line to over-bearing, and I've seriously never known anyone else quite like her. And I'm damn GLAD I don't!
Lots of introverts simply don't need a lot of people or interaction with others, while others simply don't know how to get out there and circulate. But I do know one woman who is an extreme introvert. She doesn't like people and trusts no one, and she's never had friends. Oddly enough, she seems to like me okay (but probably not a lot).

Depends on the society in question.
In some cultures, being loud/obnoxious is seriously frowned upon.
Why is being introverted seen as a dysfunction?
Because:
#1- People are afraid of what they don't know so they pre-judge
2- Highly competitive societies like capitalism is about free market and competition so extroverted traits tend to be admired, because that's what's needed to run that type of system ("having an entrepreneurial spirit" "A great PR persona")
3- Sometimes, as humans, people ascribe to group-think mentality.. whoever huffs and puffs the loudest gets the most attention (not necessarily the most respect) but it sets the standards for social dominance and hierachy
4- Some people are just plain cowards and can't accept the fact some people are different, and being different is actually quite awesome!
