Before I ate the cactus, I winced at merely the idea of eating something that ever had a thorn on it. I kept thinking about the idea of a thorn piercing my tongue and just being really disgusted by that thought. So the idea of avoiding eating cactus was a low level phobia.
Now after I ate the nopales taco and liked it, this phobia went away here.
But I think the cactus was touching on a bigger phobia in me. Pierced tongues, pierced septums and pierced cartilage all give me the heebie-jeebies. So just thinking about someone piercing their upper earlobe cartilage always makes me wince, but I have no problem with pierced earlobes.
I am also not a big fan of needles. I always need to talk to the nurse when I am getting a shot to distract myself when I get a shot. I get shots because intellectually I know I need them and that I am in no real danger, but emotionally I don't want to do that at all.
