I am originally from Massachusetts, so I qualify although I left in 1972. I moved south to Maryland for better job opportunities. I remained in Maryland and DC for my working life, and am only here as a place of retirement. I could never have found the high-paying career oportunities in North Carolina that I had in the DC area. However, if I were young enough to start over, I might consider the Triangle as a place to work.

I will pretty much second everything others say. However, I suggest a serious consideration of the family's life-time economic picture is a lot more important than the myth of Southern Hospitality.

I do enjoy my life in a beach community, but I am constantly aggrevated by how far away everything is and the need to drive everywhere.

Some of my wife's family live here. It was either here, or Detroit, where some of my family live. Wife wasn't too crazy about moving to Detroit, so here we are. This, and the weather.

Haven't moved yet....waiting on Retirement. Nephew moved to NC....my Brother (his Father) also bought a home in NC. So far, I'm getting great reviews on life in NC from them. The cost of living is ridiculously low compared to here in Ct....oh yeah....then there's this.....

I'm looking at about 6 years or so...looking at St. James Plantation in Southport at the moment. Might take a run down to visit my brother in Calabash and scout things out.

Correction: Bought small summer home here; not living in NC full-time. So my responses reflect a limited experience.
