Though I'm sure most of you know it already, I find it ridiculous that there will be two "40/42" intersections, about 2 miles from each other. I-40/NC-42, and I-40/I-42. CON-fusing!
I'd also be glad if it connected with I-74. And also I-74. Maybe one day it will also connect to I-74.
On a less snarky note, if the connection to the I-74 in Ohio becomes very definitely dead on account of OH and WV canceling everything, would it be possible to renumber what we already have in NC?

Personally I don’t have a problem with I-42, but the whole I-42/NC-42 issue seems like something that could’ve easily been avoided.
I've long given up on waiting for NCDOT to make sensible numbering choices for the new interstates. Greensboro did it for me.

Not unless Congress changes it, since they’re the ones that numbered the corridor. I don’t see that happening.

Good ol' Congress...

The toll road carries the same number because it's an extension of the Interstate (and was supposed to be an Interstate number, save for a silly funding issue). Since the route is destined to be a loop, 640 is the only other number available for use... but would you confuse that with nearby US 64?

Well it's a moot point now with the Toll NC-540 completing the beltway/loop in the future, but besides I-640, they could have also given it I-840, since the first segment of I-540 opened years before the first segment of I-840 did in Greensboro and gave Greensboro I-640 instead.
I realize I-540 was a spur off of I-40 at the time it opened, so the odd number was the correct nomenclature, but for us "road geeks" seeing a loop/beltway/bypass with a even 3-digit number is a thing of beauty!
One of the biggest violators is the I-520 loop in Augusta and North Augusta, and that shield is permanent. When South Carolina completed the loop by adding onto the I-520 spur, it should have been renumbered I-220, I-420, I-620 or I-820, oh well, life goes on!

I'm always glad to find others that appreciate the little things in life just as I do.
