Why is it the responsibility of the medical community to tell you not to have sex with prostitutes (or even random acts of sex with people who act like prostitutes)? Anyone with half a brain should know that it is risky. I have never thought that the medical community said it was okay to have sex as long as you use a condom. That's just people making up their own facts.
Most people have been immunized against Hep B but maybe they have a false sense of security because they don't realize the vaccine can wear off (or not work). I'd be majorly worried about Hep C.
Stuff like HPV you can't do much about since 90% of the population have had it at some time - they just don't know it.
There's vaccines against hepatitis. A lot of people here in sweden go to Asia, Thailand in particlar, they always take the vaccines, against both hepatitis and loads of other things that you can get, not only from humans but from other sources as well. Edit: did some checking on hepatitis:
Hep A and B do not lead to chronic hepatitis, and there are vaccines against both. these are also the ones that are easiest to get infected by.
Hep C is considered just barely possible to get through sex, and is almost only spread through blood-to blood transfer (like if you end up in an asian hospital who don't check their donors blood)
Hep D can only be gotten if you already have hep B
Hep E is like Hep A, with the exception for pregnant women, for whom it can be dangerous.
Hep G is not longer considered a hepatitis, and from what I read will dissapear in a few years after getting the infection. So for a vaccined individual there is little to worry about considering Hepatitis unless you get injured and end up ina low-class hospital.
Actually...
1) Hep B can indeed lead to chronic hepatitis, and subsequently liver cancer. You can get the immunization shots but if you don't confirm that the shots worked by doing an antibody titer, you can't assume that you are protected.
2) Hep C is indeed very possible to get through sex, but is dependent on the amount of blood and the concentration of virus in that blood being accidentally exchanged (even microscopically) during sex.
I've been traveling a bit over the past few months, all over SE Asia. I'm an extremely cautious type (almost to the point of paranoia) when it comes to my sex partners and would never in a million years dream of engaging in sexual relations with someone I don't know extremely well. Now, this is not on moral grounds, could care less about that...but rather because I consider it very high risk.
However, I have met hordes of western tourists in countries like Thailand and Philippines who readily admit that they frequent prostitutes. And these are not some old, ugly men... even younger, good looking guys who could easily find women but prefer to just visit prostitutes because they don't want relationship ties.
Most of these guys say visiting prostitutes is safe. They base it on the fact that:
1) HIV is not easily transmissible
2) Condoms are highly effective at preventing HIV
Every argument seems to revolve around HIV. Little is discussed about other potentially fatal STDs such as Hepatitis B which is 100 times more contagious than HIV and can also live outside the body for a week making contracting it quite likely. There is NO cure for Hepatitis B.
Is the medical community to blame for instilling a sense of confidence in people that if they use condoms then everything must be safe? Condoms do not prevent many STDs that can cause serious health complications. The medical community needs to do more to emphasize the extreme dangers of having sex with prostitutes.
Thoughts?
well, if you frequent "street walkers", the ones that have sex for really cheap, like around $20 - $50, then i'd say the risk is definitely greater because these tend to typically have other issues (homelessness, drug addiction). i think this is the case with a lot of the prostitutes in third world countries, because not only are they more likely to have been forced into the profession but they also don't have as much access to proper health care on a frequent basis, as do the high-end escorts in western nations.
if you're the kind that pays handsomely for the top-notch providers (and there are MANY providers as well as clients, especially in the big cities, like LA and NYC), then you really don't have much to worry about - many of the providers are actually "rated" in the community by johns and are actually much more hygienic and safety conscious than your regular, non-pro girl. in fact, the risk of getting some type of STD is probably greater if you hook up randomly with "regular" girls than if you sleep regularly with high-end escorts or even porn stars - the latter especially since they get tested at least once a month. how many non-pros get tested that often? exactly.
Ahh, another taboo topic..My favorite!
"Deny, deny, deny and lets pretend is doesn't exist!"
"The worlds oldest profession!"
I talked to a doc that specialized in testing for STD's in the LA area and his take on it was that transmission of most STD's in his patients is lower than what most people in society would have you believe. I think if you look at Brothel std statistics in Nevada you will also see that stds are not as transmissible as some would tell you with safe sex practices. Some of the woman in Brothels can see up to a 1000 customers a year and contract no STDs.
There’s a lot of information on it out there; "Prostitutes are not a major source of STD-spread. Only 3-5% of STDs are prostitution-related, compared to 30-35% which is teen-related. Despite the bunk propagated by zealous anti-prostitution advocates, prostitutes are not a major source of STD-spread, and (indeed) this suggests that they are not particularly vulnerable to STDs. This is probably because prostitutes are highly aware of safe-sex, as it is a necessity in their business, and always use condoms and other devices to make sex safer."
yep, exactly. sorry i didnt read this post prior to making mine - but we're saying essentially the same thing. alot of ppl will get all bent outta shape when you try to point this out to them, but the facts can't be argued with.
The medical community already stressed out that you're not 100% protected against STDs wearing a condom or any contraceptive. Did you missed that part before you blamed the docs?
A lot of "sex" with prostitutes, especially in southeast Asia, involves going to a massage parlor. The contact is in the form of getting a massage with ... ummm .... ahem ... a "happy ending." This is an especially low risk behavior as far as sexually transmitted diseases are concerned. I do not see anything wrong with it.
In the area of penetrative sex, I agree there is always some risks involved. Condoms are not 100% foolproof, but they do greatly reduce the risk of catching something.
I would advise anyone seeking the services of a sex worker or prostitute to use the utmost care in protecting themselves. There are a lot of sensual and erotic activities that do not involve actual penetrative sex - "outercourse" as opposed to "intercourse" - that are good options for a safer and less risky sexy good time.
First of all, your "sampling" is extremely skewed, almost ludicrously so. You admit you are only talking to men in a tiny area of world, notorious for catering to men who want sex with underaged girls.
How many people in the "real world" go to whores? I personally have never known anyone who did, beyond a few colleagues who were in the Navy way back when and who did this out of desperation. (All of these guys were overweight and extremely unattractive, incidentally).
A man who has to pay for sex is pathetic, in my view. I will exclude incredibly famous men who occasionally used prostitutes for convenience sake (The Beatles did so, also Sinatra).
Why do you care what other men tell you about sex? People lie about sex more than any other topic by far. So these lonely, desperate losers (who travel 8,000 miles to get laid and then have to PAY for it), are your "experts" on whether sex with whores is safe?
Use your head. Anyone who has to pay for it and travel that far to get it is not someone trustworthy or worth speaking to, in my view.
What about oral sex? It's usually part of foreplay if not the solo desired act. I find it very hard to believe all the men use condoms and dental dams. The 'pro' has a prior client and .....blech!!
