I could write paragraphs on it, and not speak of children or finances. However, everyone is more than entitled to their opinion and lead their lives in the direction they see fit.

What's the difference between a relationship and marriage, aside from the legal stuff?

What do you need a "partnership" for? Are you unable to make a living on your own?

There is no difference other than the fact that a marriage contact makes it difficult to just up and leave your mate.

That "legal stuff" is no small thing, just FYI.

There are many different kinds of relationships and many different kinds of marriages.

Some relationships are very much like a marriage, though nothing but marriage is really marriage!

But the best relationships are the mature, truly committed ones where the couple has taken steps to cover their bases legally with powers of attorney, living wills and wills so that they can feel as close to being as married as a married couple.

For some people, a marriage license may be "just a piece of paper". If you don't need it to enhance your level of commitment to your partner, then good for you.

But it must mean something to lots of people - look at all the gay couples fighting hard to be able to have one.

I feel so sorry for you. Really.

You think everything in life is reduced to finances???

You must have come from a broken home, or a home without a good marriage

Sorry that was your experience.

Actually, for the most part, I do. Money runs the world and you can't do anything without it. If I don't benefit financially from entering into a contract (which is what marriage involves), then I don't want any parts of it.

Again, that's sad. And shortsighted.

LM you put it perfectly!

Thank you my friend! I think it is worth saying again....

Bottom line is this...

For those lacking faith and understanding of the value of marriage, no explanation or "point" to it will suffice.

For those who value marriage and understand all its power and desirability, no explanation is necessary.

Very different. As different as renting your apartment vs owning your own home. The level of commitment and responsibility is not comparable. Of course, people who have never owned a home or been married might not understand this.
