A couple (and definitely a family of 4) with a household income of $55k in Los Angeles is not a middle class and they most likely are not in San Francisco.

I'm sorry. I see no definition of middle class that doesn't involve statistics rather than feelings about what people think they deserve to have.

The problem with using the "median" salary info is that the minimum wage earners pull down the averages....
55k in LA is still dog**** money and you ain't living large...yeah, it pays the rent, you drive a used car, but really... it's not all that much....
Bottom line... til you move out here and see, pulling out numbers off of websites doesn't mean much....
Yup. And 70k is ok for a single young person in the Bay Area. But you are definitely going to want more money if you have a family. It costs 200k to live in a 3 bedroom place in the hood where shootings are at least a daily occurrence. Or you might find a 1 bedroom condo in a marginal area.

And if you're ok with a tiny room on Treasure Island where there is nothing to do or see, you can get by with much, much less than 70k .
I really wish the term 'gold digger' would go away. Forever.
I can see why the term would be offensive to some. I think the overuse of it is offensive. But I also think that within the context of a person who pursues relationships based solely on advancing their own interests, the term, though a slang term, is not offensive.
