Why are the women on Tinder so much better looking than other dating sites? (attracted, call)

Tinder is a lot more mainstream, also people on tinder aren't always using it for dating. Many people sign up for tinder simply to look at pictures of other people and say yes or no. There really isn't a stigma of online dating attached to it. I think that's what makes tinder have a higher ratio of good looking people.
If that's the case it doesn't sound much different than 'hot or not'.

I think tinder has a ratio of above average good looking people.
Possibly for the reason that if you know you aren't good looking, there is no point using tinder because most people know tinder is a "looks" based site.
I guess it is just like basketball tryout would have way above average basketball players than the general population.
I'm in Indianapolis and OKC and POF have some good looking women and a lot of average or ugly women, but the women on Tinder are almost all in their 20s and uniformly 7/10 or better? Does Tinder just attract a different demographic?
As a technological laggard, I don't have a smartphone and have never even seen Tinder, but I can easily imagine a selection bias working here:
Since Tinder is pretty much all about looks, I would expect users to be drawn from among the above-average in attractiveness, and also expect those not above average to prefer options which play to their strengths, of which looks are not at or near the top.

There's no rating system, so it's more like the "Meet Me" feature on Hot or Not. The difference with Tinder is that it's totally free and people actually use it. I haven't been on Hot or Not for years.
I thought that at first (and there are some), but it connects to your facebook network and shows mutual friends. In addition, many of the pics here show local college and sports paraphernalia, so I'm pretty certain they're legit.
That's what they SAY. I used it for a while and it was nothing but bot-after-bot-after-bot... I gave up after a few months. No one was real.

I don't have a smartphone either (they look fun, but I don't see the need for it yet).
Anyway, based on what I read about it, I think these two explanations pretty much nailed it. If it's solely a looks based app, then it will be used mainly by people who will get the most out of it (good looking people because it plays to their strengths). Others will use other options that play to their strengths like Freemkt said.

Not everyone on Tinder is attractive though. I doubt that most people are saying to themselves, "I'm not hot enough to use Tinder." If they want to try it out, they will.
