I had to spend yesterday morning working from a library in Charlotte because my power went out due to high winds. It looks like everyone got caught with their pants down with yesterday’s weather.
We had a snow storm over the xmas holidays in the Sierras. It took us 17 hours to make a 4.5 hour trip. It sucked, but it wasn't really anyone's fault, just a bunch of bad things coming together at one time.

I heard this AM that people had been stuck 18 hours in some cases. That's hard to explain.

I live in an area that regularly gets snow, and I may becoming more risk-averse in my middle age, but I put some of this on the drivers as well. When I know a snow storm is coming through, I make sure to do my grocery shopping early, to arrange to work from home, to change plans that involve travel, etc. It sounds cold, and I get that not everyone has the same flexibility, but we do have access to up-to-the minute weather reports, so I do wonder how many of the people on the roads needed to be there and just drove into the storm for no reason. A lot of people around here will blame the city/county/PennDOT for poor snow removal, and that's fair, but they also maybe didn't have to be running errands at that time, or to make a poor DoorDash driver bring them a sandwich, you know?

*Big deep breath* Relief. My husband got a call, test results were pretty quick, his condition is NOT cancer! He's gonna be fine!

Regarding snow...

I lived in Iowa for 8 years, and I've trekked across Wyoming and the Rockies in late December, and lived in Colorado for 10 years, and I've had to drive on snow and ice many times. The crews don't ALWAYS do a bangup job of removing it even in places where it's normal, but somehow the locals manage. In the Rocky Mountain States, they are smart enough to close the highways, they have barriers that they can put up and you have no choice, you MUST exit, if conditions are really bad. Maybe that's part of why they don't have situations as bad as what's happened in Virginia.

Maybe it's because lots and lots of people drive 4WD/AWD vehicles that handle better in it. And the culture is such that if someone is in trouble, they're very likely to get rescued by anyone who comes by. If you're the one with a little car stuck in the snow....you'll get picked up, though your car will have to sit there until the storm is over and the roads are cleared.

Such good news Sonic!!! Waiting for test results like that is hugely stressful.

I'm beginning to think that we're *never* going to get any snow this season! The winter tires went on my car the second week in December and we've had pretty much nada in terms of winter weather. What a difference Christmas 2021 was from Christmas 2020!

Regarding snow tires and AWD: it's my belief that AWD makes too many people overconfident in their driving abilities in winter weather. I can't tell you how many times I've had someone speed by me in their AWD vehicle (usually an SUV rather than a Subaru sedan/hatch, Jeep, or truck) only to see them later either on the side of the road or in the median strip (at best) or in an accident (at worst) because they lost control of their vehicle. Also helped more than few of those folks get out of spots that they'd drilled themselves into with their tires because they didn't know how to "rock" out of a spot. As my father used to say, AWD is *not* all-wheel stop--I wish more people were taught that and took it to heart. That and it's always a bit amusing to me seeing people struggle to get up the hill around the corner from me while I easily buzz up it when the winter tires are on my little car.

I often head to work in the pre-dawn hours when the roads are still in process of being treated/cleared and working from home is not an option, so spending the money on winter rubber was and is money well-spent. One of the nice things about where I live is that I'm right above an emergency snow route and I live between two main bus lines. That means that so long as I can get either up or down the hill from my house, those road are generally clear as they have first priority with the road crews.

To Sonic: what a relief that news regarding your husband must be to you both! How is your FIL holding up?

When there are winter storms coming through, many local folks will stay home until there is a break in the weather. During the holidays we got 10"-12" of snow. The prediction was for 1"-3". The Meteorologists are often wrong, unfortunately. Now, it has warmed up a bit, it started raining, the snow is melting.

@ Sonic, This is Wonderful news about your DH. I had a scab on my ear & the side of my head that wasn't healing quickly. My Veteran's doc sprayed them with liquid Nitrogen, fixed me up...

True about AWD... I've also seen a lot of bad incidents involving overconfident drivers. When I drove a minivan, which was most of my adult life, it always handled well in snow, but I drove slowly and carefully.

And there were a few times where I tried to get to work, but gave up and called off because roads were just that bad. Sheets of ice and such. Awful. I even stayed in a hotel one night rather than trying to make it home from work (we had a hotel next door.)

My FIL is feeling better I think, since he's got his appetite back and is actually eating, but he has various conditions that do just make his life difficult and painful. We are still waiting for a bunch of referrals to various procedures and specialists to try and figure out what's going on with various internal situations...liver is the one I'm betting is gonna be a problem for him. He is happy to see us when we visit, though, and appreciates our help with things. I looked into hospice/palliative care just to understand how that might work if/when we get there. It is good to know what options are. I think that if they end up telling him that he has cancer in his colon, prostate or liver (his docs can't seem to agree what they think it is and he hasn't had the right tests yet to narrow it down)...I doubt if he's going to want to endure treatments. He has no particular desire to fight to stay alive if it means going through a lot of suffering just to be around longer, he's at peace with the idea of dying...not trying to hasten it, of course, but...yeah. If it's his time, he's OK with that.

So anyways, I've been wondering just how much of a "fight" he would be expected to put up if he doesn't want to, and the answer to that is apparently if a doctor says that the natural progression of any condition (like cancer) that he may have would take him out in 6 months or less, then the insurance he's got would cover hospice care, which could be done at home... Basically it's a question of "can the old man just get some really good drugs to make whatever time he's got left as free of suffering as possible?" Where does the scale tip, for quality over quantity of life, if that's what he wants?
