I can't answer for you. My limit of understanding on how things around us interact to form what we perceive to be real stops when filling emotional gaps. I don't understand why people choose to ignore facts for any reason. From "not relevant to me" on through to the need for an Omni-dude holding your hand. I wouldn't be shocked if you are an atheist just trying to push absurdity to get your way.
so please answer me "why does the flood have to be literal." for you.
The Bible never writes concerning the historic world-wide flood as fiction. None of the Old Testament writers treated it as fiction. Jesus Christ and the other New Testament writers spoke and wrote of it as fact.
If it is not factual, then the writers of the OT and NT and Christ were not being truthful.
But since they never lied, since they told the truth, I can rely on them that it is a truthful account.

I'm reminded of an old "Happy Days" episode, where Fonzie is telling his friends about this wonderful girl he just met. And she's a virgin, no less! So Richie asks him, "how do you know she's a virgin?" And Fonzie says, "She told me so."
So Richie says, "How do you know she's not lying?"
Fonzie looks at him, completely shocked. "Virgins don't lie!", he exclaims.
I remember that scene every single time I read this forum.

So you are saying that because Fonzie may be deceived that the speakers of the bible and writers of the Bible purposely lied? You aren't very convincing if that's what you are trying to do.
Read what I wrote again and notice the word "Jesus Christ . . . spoke."
If he did, none of the writers were there to hear it. It was hearsay. Written by non contemporaries.
