Well as Tevye said in Fiddler on the Roof, "It's no shame to be poor -- but it's no great honor, either."
There are a ton of things I'd rather have than money, if I had to choose ... family, friends, health, education, things like that. But if I had to choose between faith in god (something I don't have and don't value anyway) and money, then I'd take the money, I'm afraid.
I've spent most of my life without money. Being poor and doing without teaches many valuable lessons.
Five years ago, at 57, I went from well below the poverty line (where I'd languished for 30-some years) to well above.
But throughout my poor decades, I was, and remain, a glass-half-full guy - even if I had to hold it above eye level and tilt. My faith in better times ahead never wavered. Those years without $ certainly taught me not to over-value money. And I don't.
Having it is better than not, no question.
But trade it for whatever inner force kept me putting one foot in front of the other?
Nah.
Hope is priceless.
And if based on faith, pretty much an unstoppable force.
We have money. We have faith. No question which we would choose. Money with faith is nice. Faith without money is doable and one has joy and peace.
Money without faith is empty and sad.
