Wait, Let me ask you guys, why do you take these list so seriously???
Personally I like the list, the give me something to research. No one in the article says it applies to all folks but if you are preparing for retirement, like I am and a state you had in mind pops up, it may give you some thing to dig for.
I lived in Southern NJ for 18 years, you couldn't get me out of that state fast enough. high property taxes, lousy services, lousy expensive healthcare system (IMOand I had a spouse battling cancer so definitely had experience) the only thing worth going back to for me is the beaches.

I was thinking that the bulk of us retirees are lacking rich uncles, so there is no need to be concerned which state those rich uncles live in.
yeah, get me the addy of "rich Uncles", I always wanted one of those, especially after inheriting $xxx, xxx family debt from my parents.
Gen X writing 'retirement articles' belong on a blog, but... news sells (...) even FAKE news (seems to be going at a premium with our gullible populace.)
Research is research, I don't see why someone has to meet an age requirement to report on a state's health care, health ratings, and tax situation.

For persons nearing retirement, who aren't quite yet there, such lists are a form of pornographic entertainment. They allow one to fantasize, to envision hypotheticals, while it's still premature to be doing actual research, let alone making actual decisions.
Where such lists are indeed helpful, is for persons who (1) don't have any family left, and therefore no extant geographic connections; and also (2) relocated early in life, for career-purposes, but never built a connection throughout their careers with the new locale.
As for the comments about Gen-X, please consider: the oldest members of Gen-X are now 53 or 54... precisely that pre-retirement age, where it's often too early to make actual steps towards retirement, but not so early, as to begin fantasizing.
I think the data is about existing retirees in those states.
If you're moving from somewhere else, how is it an negative thing to you if average income of existing retirees in the state is below average?
Taxes are a major factor in my retirement. My number 1 factors though are crime, safety, education, so I will gladly stay and retire in my New England state.
That's what makes these lists interesting and fun to look at but unrealistic in that unless a list is specifically catered to what fits us or what we are looking for, they are virtually worthless.
My priorities are
-crime and safety
-affordability so I can buy a house and not have a mortgage
-low property taxes
-a smallish quaint town located within easy driving distance of a larger city
-a 4 season climate without extremes
I've yet to see a list which helps me but I don't need one. I do lots of research.
Research is research, I don't see why someone has to meet an age requirement to report on a state's health care, health ratings, and tax situation.
Exactly.
These repetitive complaints from the same person/people every time someone posts a new list from some magazine or other online article are ridiculous. You don't have to be 65 in order to research and author an article on places to retire.
