There's a limit to how long I can sit, period, whether on a plane or elsewhere. When I sit at home or in the car I need to use a coccyx cushion.
I can no longer sit on a hard surface such as a wood chair or bleacher at all without it resulting in almost immediate pain, so I don't do that. Length of tolerable time sitting on something upholstered/cushioned depends on the surface.
Recently I got stuck in traffic on the way back from a nursery and what should have been a two-hour drive turned into 3 1/2. Not fun during or for the rest of the night afterwards. Sciatica is a harsh mistress, LOL
I used to fly a lot when younger and enjoyed it but now I won't do it anymore because I don't want to deal with the security hassles. I also don't want to stay anywhere but at home overnight (another thing I was fine with when younger but not at all anymore.) This means that if I can't get there and back in my own car within a 24 hour period, I have zero interest in going.
Could I sit in a car or train seat (if I had my coccyx cushion) for several hours? Yes. Would my back and legs be complaining about it bigtime during and after? For sure. The added nonsense associated with flying, however, is a dealbreaker for me. Plus I don't want to be stuck in that much of an enclosed space for an extended amount of time with that many people, packed in like sardines with too darn many reeking of cologne, body sprays, and what have you. I have fragrance allergies so that would be absolutely brutal. Also I've had too many instances in the past of coming down sick with something 3 to 5 days after having taken a flight. No thanks, I'd rather drive. Alone, lol.
In general there are always ways to offset whatever age related problem may be induced by sitting, and it all depends on how badly you want to go to whatever destination.

In general there are always ways to offset whatever age related problem may be induced by sitting, and it all depends on how badly you want to go to whatever destination.
The flights I take are two hours or less, so no problems there.
But riding Megabus from SF to LA takes 8 hours.
There's a half-hour break in the middle of the journey,
but even so, 8 hours of sitting is quite enough...
wouldn't want it to be any more than that.
I've flown business class like 4 times on long trips and it is actually...... pleasant. But the price is obscene.

Can you say more about what you enjoyed about a cruise ship over the ocean? For some reason (dirty carpets, claustrophobia) cruise ships sound horrible to me.
Where on earth did you get the idea that cruise ships have dirty carpets ??? Like hotels cruise lines and ships can be a 5 star experience or a 1 star experience depending on what you are willing to pay for that experience.
We have been on 15 cruises and heading out on our 16th this coming February. On all our cruises we have never stayed in any cabin category below a mini-suite which means you have a living space with a couch along with a decent sized balcony; some bigger some smaller. We eat most of our dinners in specialty restaurants from Italian to French along with very nice steak restaurants and we are willing to pay extra for that experience. Unlike hotels where you may see the maid in the morning only, on cruise ships you have a cabin steward who is pretty much always around to meet your needs from refilling your ice bucket to getting you extra towels and their cleaning duties rarely stop.
In reality cruise ships are floating resorts and the bigger more bells and whistles ones have everything from ice shaking rinks to bowling alleys as well as quiet libraries and coffee shops to meet the needs for the more sedate crowd. And most cruise ships have pretty impressive spas if that is your thing, and it certainly is mine which is where I spend most of my 1st sea day while my SO if off playing Trivia or attending some lecture.
I can honestly say I never had a bad cruise experience, and any small issue that ever came up was quickly remedied and forgotten but the wonderful memories of seeing the glaciers in Alaska, going through the Panama Canal, leaving the port of NYC passing Lady Liberty, and all other beautiful places we have visited by sea are memories that still bring a smile to my face and last a lifetime.
If before I cruised I had listened to and taken to heart all the propaganda from the cruise bashers I would have missed out on some wonderful cruise experiences and additionally meeting so many great people from all over the world.
You will never know if cruising isn't your thing unless you try it for yourself.

You need to take one then. I don't know what ships you heard about but on our recent transatlantic cruise on Princess everything was spotless. They clean your room twice a day, their hallway carpets are a lot cleaner than mine at home because they are constantly vacuuming them every single day, and there's really no way to track in dirt because your on a ship with no soil anywhere to be found. Only an interior cabin might be claustrophobic, our balcony cabin (only slightly more than a view cabin) was as large as many hotel rooms I've stayed in, and we had a balcony with chairs to sit out and enjoy the breeze and relax while watching the sunset, and waking up to the beautiful views of your next port of call as you pull into the harbor. You can dine in the more formal dining rooms, at a buffet, at several specialty restaurants, or casual walk-away food places (think pizza, burgers or tacos) that you can eat on deck at a table by the pool, or get room service at no extra charge. You're entertained every night with different shows ranging from cabaret style singers to song and dance extravaganzas, acrobats, magicians, and even a passenger talent shows. They show movies under the stars at night on deck. I can't vouch for Carnival or other similar low-price lines, but we found nothing "horrible" at all on our cruise. Can't wait to go again.

It is maddening when someone conflates the Carnival experience with Seabourn or Silverseas or Crystal.
Spoiler alert: There are no dirty carpets on better cruise lines. The ship is cleaned relentlessly, inside and out. They even have machines that clean cabin window exteriors so you get a spotless view. Your cabin is serviced by your steward or stewardess twice a day. Pay a little more and a butler will unpack your clothes and perform any other services you might require.
I don't know of any more luxurious way to travel but you have to be prepared to pay for it. If you pay peanuts, you'll get monkeys.
