After losing her job as a journalist, Janet Blaser left Santa Cruz for Mazatlán, where she started her own magazine. Here are the pros and cons of her life abroad.
Interesting.
Two issues for me; safety and good medical care or I could do it if I didn't have family.
There's lots of us doing this. We also live on $1,000 a month beachfront here in Ecuador.
Safety and medical care are fine ($80 a month for both of us).
We save the rest of our income for travel.
I can imagine living beachfront in the U.S. where I used to rent a condo, but I'd need 10K a month!
Interesting article. Liked how Janet said it had a live and let live vibe. That appeals to me a lot. The photos were gorgeous. I don't speak any Spanish so i'd be sunk. Hubby does know some. She seems to be doing ok with the medical so far. If I were to ever consider something like this I'd have to do a ton of research first. But enjoyed the article.
FWIW, the biggest concern I'd have would be driving there. It said she drove "packed to the gills." There's no way I'd want to drive through rural Mexico with their crime levels.

When was the last time you drove through rural Mexico?

The saying in Mexico is: Bad roads good people, good roads bad people.

For me, the issue arose when I read that Mazatlán is in Sinaloa. The Sinaloa Cartel is no joke. I wouldn't want to drive to Culiacan in order to travel by air.
