In my experience, you can't assume this will happen. I have a friend who retired at 58 with plenty of money and he never really did find a purpose. Now he is deeply depressed. He isn''t married, and I think having a spouse helps, but it's still no guarantee of anything.

I retired at age 49 and was the best thing I ever did. We've lived overseas for 18 yrs now and made it permanent, since our home is now here and we have no plans in returning to the U.S..
Retirement life is good!

Cool update. Glad to hear things work out.
I am 7 years older than my wife and she already told me she plans on working long after I retire. She loves her job but then again, things could change by then so you never know. Of course, she might drive me crazy with her 'honey do' list once i do retire...
