During a very strange period in my life, this phobia got to me, and seeing as how my family live in Jamestown and have my entire life, I bit that off hard, but I know it is not so easy for others. Try singing a song or thinking about nothing, or something..In any case, you don't really need to go over the bridges to see Newport, just go around through Providence and Fall River, the bridge there is really wide.
The bridges in Rhode Island especially the Jamestown and Newport Bridges are modern enough so it isn't any different than driving on a highway. If you just keep looking straight ahead you wouldn't even know you were on a bridge. You are driving on a paved road just like the highway. It isn't like some bridges or the old Jamestown bridge where you had to drive in narrow lanes over metal grates that you could see through if you, as a passenger, opened your door a crack and looked down while the car drove over.
thanks, I realize it is an unfounded fear, but most "phobias" are, it's a fear of heights. Guess I better get out and practice on the Coronado Bay Bridge here...don't want to miss Newport.
Hmmm, I'll trade places with you anytime. What a great bridge to practice on!
I've been over the Falls River bridge and that one didn't bother me because, as you said, it's very wide just like a highway. I don't like the bridges that look from a distance like an arc, like the Coronado.
Only time I've ever been nervous about going over a bridge was the OLD section (not the suspension portion) of the SF Bay Bridge which experts predict will crumble during even a minor earthquake. They're rebuilding a new one next to it, but it's not done yet! Nothing in RI is as scary (for me) as that. Unfortunately, I think I may have to drive over it during the next few days.
