Just seeing this now. Wish I had known about this. 27 food trucks, 30 breweries.

MP, there's still an hour left.

The Worcester Telegram & Gazette is reporting today that the new baseball stadium planned for the city is already some $30M over budget. No significant construction has really started as there has just been a ceremonial groundbreaking and some site prep work. Before any real progress has even begun, the construction costs have resen $9.5M and the price to purchase and prep the needed land will require $20M more than anticipated.

This stadium is supposed to open in April 2021 which will be an extremely tight time-frame.

I am guessing it won't be ready. There is not even any steel yet in the ground 15 months just 15 months before the supposed opening. I just read somewhere else that a person familiar with Worcester just drove through the are where the park will be located and couldn't even yet identify its future site.

It will be interesting to see what WooSox ownership does if the Worcester ballpark cannot open in mid April of 2021. The lease at McCoy is up after this season so that would be no given as it would require negotiation.

It is looking more and more like McCoy Stadium may not see the Pawsox play there this season. 24 of 70 home game dates have now passed with no start up plan yet announced. The regular season was to start April 9th and conclude September 7th.

Meanwhile in Worcester, construction has started up again on Polar Park after a nearly five week shutdown due to Covid-19. It had already been a very tight construction schedule for opening in April 2021 before the pandemic. The loss of several weeks and probable future building material shortages make opening on time now seem very unlikely. The team may be looking at a temporary home for the early part of next season. McCoy could be a possibility but a Worcester venue back up such as Hanover Field at Holy Cross might be a better bet given season tickets have already been sold.

The bigger issue surrounding Polar Park will be the hoped for development in and around it that Worcester politicians promised would bring in additional new tax revenues to pay for the upfront $100M public taxpayer investment. Most economists had previously opined that generating the needed tax revenue to completely pay off the investment was a pipe dream in a booming economy. A prolonged recession due to the pandemic will make those odds even steeper. I would think any new development near the park will now take far longer to materialize. Most companies are in the near term going to be very cautious and slow about making new costly capital investments. Worcester taxpayers will very likely have to make up the tax revenue shortages for the ballpark, which is already some $30M over its initial budget.
