Who do you suggest they protest?

Do you have some reason to believe her killer will not be prosecuted?

You do know he was imprisoned for his treatment of natives, right? He was a horrible man for his time!

Not what the pages on your link said. Perhaps you should have chosen others.

And he wasn't seeking gold for king and country. Good god. What romantic nonsense. He was trying to get rich himself!!!! It's not nobility. It's GREED.

Yes he was seeking gold for king and country. He was sent officially- of course he was also looking to get rich- they all were. You're parsing here. No one said it was nobility!

And neither Scandinavians nor he discovered America. People were here already. There were rich thriving cities (which thanks to Europeans were largely destroyed by introduced diseases and displace peoples), never mind some rinky dink colonies.

And the Indians came from Asia and middle Americans came from Polynesia. The point is that Columbus was a late comer in the scheme of things. I didn't argue he wasn't!! His statue was to commemorate the founding of America by Europeans. That's all.
And, I do love all 21st century interpretations of morality. Morality gets updated all the time so we DON'T Want To ERASE anything that's gone on before. We do need to understand and interpret people in the context of THEIR TIMES.

Shall we erase all mentions of Hitler from history? I say we put up a statue of him and say "read this story and weep"!

About the Hitler statue? Let's not. And, let's not confuse removing statues glorifying historic figures, we know now to have been terrible, with erasing their historic legacy. Statues serve one purpose - tribute. Any statue of anyone known to have enslaved, tortured and/or butchered any group of people needs to go. That goes for statues of traitors too.

OK that is where you are going a bit letting your 21st century lens get in the way. You do realize many of our early presidents were slave owners right? Washington, Jefferson...

I'm sure the 23rd century will judge YOU quite differently than current times do.

I have to admit that I wasn't aware that Columbus was such a bad person.

For those who did know, why didn't you have a problem with the statue up until recently?

No doubt there is a totality of contribution to humanity which should be taken into account, as well as time & place. In some cases the line in the sand can be quite difficult - requiring a longer discussion. Many, many other examples are very easy. This is new territory & a process is required rather than knee jerk lawlessness.

As somebody who was aware, I think there are better uses of efforts and resources than removing the statue of a man that has been dead for hundreds of years; while also having the awareness that his behavior was not only typical of other colonizers in that era, but also promoted by their home countries. And that is STILL how I feel, that is focus any anger on people being harmed TODAY such as that woman murdered on Admiral St. and this man and woman shot at Prospect Park the other day:

https://www.wpri.com/news/local-news...in-providence/

"PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Police are investigating after two people were shot early Friday morning in Providence’s College Hill neighborhood, according to Major David Lapatin.
Lapatin said a man and a woman in their early 20s were shot around 2:45 a.m. at Prospect Park on Congdon Street."

This culture of violence is a far greater threat to us right now, that a statue of Christopher Columbus in Elmwood.
